&ldquoWhat is Art&rdquo I ask myself as I watch bubbles erupt from one of Susanta Mandal&rsquos installations from his solo exhibition It Doesn&rsquot Bite. I don&rsquot take to it nor do I understand it &mdash the bubbles, steel and transparent pipes are just too abstract for me to make anything of them. The OED says, &ldquo[Art is] the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.&rdquo In earlier centuries, art was created and commissioned to beautify whether as paintings inside Egyptian pyramids or the Renaissance works of Michelangelo or the sculptures in Khajuraho. Here, at the second edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, all I hoped for was something that would appeal to me, if not in a way that stimulated my senses, then just in its beauty and simplicity. I was to be surprised.
