My new friend Nandu inserted two naked wires into a socket and the wheel whirred to life. He slapped a blob of clay onto the centre of the wheel and moulded it into a cylindrical shape before indicating that I should take control. As I touched the clay and tried to mimic his technique to create a vase, I felt empowered. But I also realised that at the end of the day, creating just about anything on the wheel needed constant self-control if you pressed too hard, the clay would just collapse into a useless pile.
