Along the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, the Mising community developed the Chang Ghar, a stilted house designed around recurring floods. The structure is raised above ground level, with the height of the stilts determined by the highest flood levels recorded in the area. Families live on the upper floor, while the space below can accommodate poultry and livestock. Bamboo is central to the design because it is lightweight, flexible and readily available in Assam. Perforated bamboo walls and floors allow air to circulate, helping keep the interiors cooler, while thatched or reed roofs provide cover. Contemporary Chang Ghars have also adapted, with some using cement pillars and stronger wooden floors as Mising communities move away from traditional riverside settlements.
