There exists a cave off the Scottish Isles named after the legendary Gaelic warrior, Fingal. According to the original Irish folklore, Fionn constructed a massive stone bridge across the sea between Ireland and Scotland. This was done so that he could confront his fierce rival, the Scottish giant Benandonner. When this bridge collapsed due to the epic confrontation, only the two extreme ends remained standing: the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim and Fingal’s Cave on Staffa. Modern geology tells the same story in a different language. Both these sites were forged by the exact same subterranean lava flow during a period of intense volcanic activity roughly 60 million years ago.
