Pilgrims and religious worshippers will soon observe Maha Shivaratri on February 26, a celebration that honours Hindu deity Shiva. During this time, devotees often flock to various destinations and undertake spiritual journeys. One such transformative spiritual journey is the Panch Kailash Yatra or five sacred sites intimately connected to Shiva.

The Panch Kailash Yatra invites travellers to forge a deeper connection with the divine while immersing in breathtaking landscapes and testing one's physical limits. This includes revered peaks of Adi Kailash, Manimahesh Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash, Kinner Kailash, and the awe-inspiring Mount Kailash—each of which is steeped in spirituality and natural beauty.

Of the five, Mount Kailash is a revered pilgrimage site for Indians. According to ancient scriptures, it is considered one of the five abodes of Shiva. Three of these sacred sites—Kinnaur Kailash, Mani Mahesh, and Shrikhand Mahadev—are nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. Adi Kailash is located in the mystical terrain of Uttarakhand, while the majestic Mount Kailash stands tall in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Here is a guide to the places you will visit on the yatra, and what to expect on the journey.

Adi Kailash

Adi Kailash is a majestic peak located in the Himalayas, specifically in the Kumaon region of the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand. Often referred to as Shiva Kailash or Jonglingkong Peak, Adi Kailash is believed to be the divine abode of Shiva, similar to the highly revered Mount Kailash in Tibet. There are several sacred sites to visit along the trek to Adi Kailash, which has its base camp just 14 kilometers from Kutti village. Many trekkers take the opportunity to stop at Gaurikund and pay their respects at the nearby Shiva and Parvati temple.

The trek begins in Dharchula, Uttarakhand, and passes through Tawaghat, Gunji, Nabi Village, and Jolingkong. The distance from Gunji to Jolingkong is approximately 65 kilometres. Since this route is near the Indo-China border, obtaining an Inner Line Permit from Dharchula is essential. Be sure to pack lightly, but remember to bring essential items such as warm clothing and trekking gear. Do take the time to acclimatise and avoid altitude sickness.

Manimahesh Kailash

Nestled in the breathtaking Bharmour region of Himachal Pradesh, the Manimahesh Kailash towers at a height of 5,653 meters. The Manimahesh Lake not only captivates the eye, but also enhances the spiritual experience of the destination. The Bharmour trek journeys through Hadsar and Dhancho before reaching the pristine Manimahesh Lake.

The trek spans approximately 13 kilometers from Hadsar to the lake, offering both a physical challenge and the reward of breathtaking landscapes. To make the most of your experience, it's advisable to start your day early and plan for an overnight stay in Dhancho. This way, you'll be refreshed and ready to fully appreciate of the Manimahesh Lake.

Incidentally, the Manimahesh Yatra, which ends with a holy dip in a glacial lake beneath the Manimahesh Kailash Peak, about 34 kilometres from town, takes place in August-September. The festival is held from Krishna Janmashtami to Radhashtami.

Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash

The Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash is a must-visit pilgrimage site nestled in Himachal Pradesh. Shaped like a Shivalinga and soaring at an impressive altitude of 5,155 meters, the peak is revered as one of the sacred abodes of Shiva. The journey begins in the charming Jaon Village, where the trek sets off toward the landscapes of Singhgad, Thachru, Kali Ghati, and Bheem Dwar, culminating at the majestic Shrikhand Mahadev. Covering approximately 35 kilometers, this trek promises several steep climbs and breathtaking views.

Kinner Kailash

Kinner Kailash is located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh and is renowned for its 79-foot-tall Shivalinga rock formation. The trek to this sacred peak begins in Tangling village, which is about a six-to-seven-hour drive from Shimla. The trekking route includes several important waypoints: Tangling Village, Ganesh Bagh, Gufa, Parvati Kund, and Kinner Kailash Parvat. The trek is approximately 17 kilometers each way. It is advisable to start early in order to avoid extreme weather conditions later in the day.

Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash is a revered pilgrimage site for many Indians. This majestic mountain is located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and is believed to be the divine residence of Mahadeva and his consort, Parvati. Pilgrims undertake a sacred journey to circumambulate the mountain, a spiritual practice known as "parikrama" in Hinduism. Standing at 6,638 meters, Mount Kailash is also hailed as the "Centre of the Universe" and the sacred dwelling of Shiva.

There is much to see in the historic city of Kathmandu, Nepal. But pull away from the cityscapes and head further for a spiritual journey. From there, venture to Nepalgunj, continue to Simikot, and then to Taklakot, ultimately arriving at Darchen—the gateway to one of the most transformative spiritual experiences of your life. The parikrama, or circumambulation, of this sacred mountain is a path filled with wonder and reverence. Set off from Darchen to Diraphuk, traverse the challenging Dolma La Pass, marvel at Zuthulphuk, and return to Darchen, completing a pilgrimage that has inspired countless souls over the centuries.
