Near the equator, on Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwenzori Mountains rise through veils of mist towards snow and ice. Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” this dramatic range has captivated explorers for centuries. Today, it offers one of Africa’s most distinctive trekking experiences.

Within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, trails wind through dense montane forests and bamboo groves before opening onto a surreal alpine world of giant lobelias, tree heathers and groundsels. Waterfalls tumble into glacial valleys, while high-altitude lakes punctuate the landscape. Above them all, Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak reaches 5,109 m, making it Africa’s third-highest summit. The ascent demands stamina, preparation, and time, but shorter hikes offer glimpses of this remarkable wilderness too. Trailheads include Kilembe and Mihunga; arrange treks with experienced local guides and allow time for acclimatisation. Fly to Entebbe International Airport, then travel by road to Kasese in western Uganda, the main gateway to the mountains.
