Guide To Mecca, The Holy City In Saudi Arabia

Be it performing Hajj or Umrah, proper planning and understanding of the rituals will ensure that your pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia is smooth

OT Staff

Mecca (Makkah), the spiritual heart of Islam, is a city of profound significance and unmatched devotion. Located in western Saudi Arabia, Mecca draws millions of Muslim pilgrims worldwide yearly for Hajj and Umrah. While non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the holy city, this guide is tailored for Muslim travellers seeking practical tips, spiritual insight, and logistical information to ensure a smooth and enriching journey to Islam’s most sacred destination.

Mecca is the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the site of the Kaaba—the cube-shaped structure housed within the Masjid al-Haram, Islam’s holiest mosque. Every prayer performed by Muslims around the world is oriented towards the Kaaba. The city’s central role in the Hajj pilgrimage—one of the five pillars of Islam—has made it a beacon of spiritual unity for over 1,400 years.

Places To Visit In Mecca

Masjid al-Haram: The largest mosque in the world, home to the Kaaba. Perform Tawaf (circumambulating the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah hills) here as part of your pilgrimage rituals.

Jabal al-Nour: This mountain houses the Cave of Hira, where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the first revelation. While the climb is steep, it’s a powerful spiritual experience.

Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat: These sites are central to the Hajj rites and can be visited during or outside for reflection.

Masjid al-Taneem (Masjid Aisha): A popular location for pilgrims starting a new Umrah, as it lies just outside the Haram boundary.

Cultural Etiquette

Muslim pilgrims from all over the world gather at the Grand Mosque in Mecca
  • Dress modestly in line with Saudi cultural norms. For men during pilgrimage, wearing the Ihram (two white cloths) is obligatory, while women should wear modest, loose clothing with a headscarf.

  • Avoid photography inside sacred sites unless explicitly allowed.

Food & Dining

Mecca offers a wide range of halal food options. From Middle Eastern staples like kebabs, hummus, and mandi rice to South Asian and Southeast Asian cuisine catering to international pilgrims, there’s something for everyone.

  • Local favourites: Try Mutabbaq (stuffed savoury pancake) or Kebsa (spiced rice with meat).

  • International chains like Al Baik, KFC, and McDonald's are also easily available.

Tips For A Smooth Pilgrimage

  • Stay hydrated, especially during warmer months. Carry a refillable water bottle and use the free Zamzam water dispensers in the Haram.

  • Plan your prayers and visits to the mosque early, as the crowds can swell rapidly.

  • For a smooth experience, use official apps like Nusuk (for permits and information).

Best Time To Visit:

There are two main ways to visit Mecca: during Hajj or for Umrah.

Hajj takes place annually during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. It is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able. Due to the massive crowds, it’s heavily regulated and requires advanced booking through authorised Hajj operators.

Umrah, known as the ‘lesser pilgrimage,’ can be performed any time of year and is less demanding than Hajj. Many pilgrims prefer visiting during the cooler months from November to February, avoiding the intense summer heat.

Places to Stay:

Accommodations in Mecca range from basic lodges to luxury five-star hotels, many of which are located within walking distance of the Masjid al-Haram.

  • Luxury options: Hotels like the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower, Raffles Makkah Palace, and Conrad Jabal Omar Makkah offer views of the Kaaba and premium amenities.

  • Mid-range & budget stays: Many pilgrims opt for affordable hotels slightly further away, with regular shuttle services to the Haram.

Book well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

How To Reach:

Mecca is well-connected via the King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) near Jeddah, the main gateway. From there, it’s about an hour-long drive to Mecca. The high-speed Haramain train also connects Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina in under an hour, offering a comfortable alternative.

Entry to Mecca is restricted to Muslims only. Visitors are required to obtain a visa, which can be a Hajj visa, Umrah visa, or a tourist visa with Umrah eligibility.
