All About The Picturesque Keran Sector In Jammu And Kashmir

Among these, Keran sector, along the LoC, has emerged as a popular new travel destination in Kashmir.

It has been a significant transformation. Previously known for cross-border shelling and infiltrations, these areas are now popular tourist destinations as peace returns.

Keran sector is located in the Neelum Valley on the bank of the Neelum (Kishanganga) River. The border tehsil in Kupwara district is home to diverse communities like Kashmiri, Gujjar, and Bakarwal.

On your way to Keran, you will pass through the picturesque Firkiyan Gali or Pharkiyan Gali, a mountain pass at an altitude of 9,840 ft with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire valley, forests, meadows, and glistening streams.

The area is surrounded by pristine natural beauty, making it ideal for outdoor activities like trekking, hiking, camping, and nature walks. You can also take leisurely walks along the banks of the Kishanganga. The river provides opportunities for rafting and fishing. Camp out under stars, go for hikes, treks, and birdwatching trails in the valley's lush meadows and forests. The region is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including endangered species such as the Kashmir musk deer and the Himalayan black bear.

The region is dotted with examples of traditional Kashmiri architecture, with beautiful wooden houses with sloping roofs.

The Post Office

The post office located on the banks of the Kishenganga River in the Keran sector has been operational since the British era. It has one postmaster and three mail runners. A signboard refers to it as the "first post office of India".

Permits

All non-resident travellers to the border areas of Keran, Karnah, and Machil have to get permission online from the District Magistrate of Kupwara.

In case you do not have your own vehicle, you can hire a vehicle in Kupwara or Kralpora market.

You can stay at the government-owned rest houses or local homestays. Camping tents are also available for hire.

The nearest railway station is Pampore which is around 113 km away. The nearest airport is Srinagar, around 104 km away. You can drive down to Keran from Srinagar.

Best Time To Visit

It is beautiful all year round, but May to August is the best time to go.
