Kashmir-Ladakh Zoji-la Pass has been opened by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Located at a height of 11,650 ft, Zoji-la Pass serves as an important connector between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.

The pass reopened strategically days ahead of schedule on April 21.

Every year, the pass reopens at the end of April and closes around November when the temperature drops very low.

In 2020, the pass had remained open for a longer period of time and also opened before the scheduled date this year.

This time the pass was closed only for 110 days (as opposed to the usual 150 days).

Zoji-La will soon receive a smart tunnel located about 100 km away from Srinagar. The construction of the tunnel began in 2018. The 14.2 km two-lane, bi-directional single tube tunnel will reduce the amount of time taken to reach Ladakh.

Apart from CCTV monitoring, the tunnel will also have some exclusive features making it a smart tunnel. For instance, a ventilation system, emergency lighting, and a tunnel radio system along with emergency telephones, and firefighting cabinets.
