Ticket to Hornbill 2026: Nagaland Brings Its Music, Culture, And Festival Spirit To Delhi

Nagaland is bringing a taste of the Hornbill Festival to Delhi this October, with two days of music, cultural performances and a national band battle at Talkatora Stadium. The showcase will also make the case for visiting Nagaland beyond its annual festival.

The Government of Nagaland, through Tourism Nagaland and the Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA), has announced Ticket to Hornbill 2026, a two-day showcase at Talkatora Stadium on October 16 and 17. Conceived as a prelude to the Hornbill Festival, the event will introduce Delhi audiences to Nagaland’s music, traditions and contemporary creative scene before the main festival begins in December.

The opening day on October 16 will feature cultural performances, live music and artistic presentations from Nagaland. Entry is free, with gates opening at 5 PM. Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, union ministers, ambassadors, and other dignitaries are expected to attend, subject to confirmation.

The following day turns the spotlight on independent music. Ticket to Hornbill – India’s Biggest Band Battle will bring emerging bands from across India to the Talkatora stage, with the winning act earning a performance opportunity at the Hornbill Music Festival in Nagaland in December. Presented by Casio India, the competition has an INR 20 lakh cash prize pool, while Furtados and Sennheiser are contributing individual musical instrument prizes worth INR 5 lakh.

For Nagaland, the event is also a way to connect its cultural identity with a wider audience. Tourism Minister Temjen Imna Along said the showcase would create a direct introduction to the state while encouraging audiences to experience the Hornbill Festival itself.

Abu Metha, advisor to the chief minister of Nagaland and chairman of the investment and development authority of Nagaland, said the initiative also reflects a larger effort to create professional opportunities for the state's young musicians. TaFMA chairman Theja Meru pointed to the gap between the talent of independent bands and their access to major venues, industry attention, and financial support.

The band battle, which begins at 5 PM on October 17, is open to emerging groups from across India. Tickets are priced at INR 200 and are available through Ahibi.

What To Expect From The Hornbill Festival In Nagaland

While Ticket to Hornbill is designed to bring a slice of Nagaland to Delhi, the December festival remains the bigger draw for travellers. Held annually in Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, the Hornbill Festival (December 1 to December 10, 2026) brings together the state’s tribes through traditional performances, music, food, crafts and cultural showcases. Over the years, it has also developed a strong contemporary music programme, making it an important stop for music enthusiasts as well as cultural travellers.

But Nagaland’s tourism offering extends beyond the festival grounds. As Metha explained to Outlook Traveller, the state is positioning itself around experiences rather than conventional luxury tourism.

“Nagaland is not known for tourist resorts or luxury tourism; we focus on experiential tourism,” he said. “We focus on homestays, village getaways, adventure sports, hikes, eco-tourism, and understanding tribal life.”

That approach also means that travellers arriving during Hornbill can expect a destination where the festival is only one part of the experience. “The experience that you get in Nagaland will be completely different from other types of tourism that you have,” Metha said. “Our focus is not on luxury, and yes, we have a lot of gaps in infrastructure.”

Those gaps are particularly visible during Hornbill, when demand can outstrip the state’s limited accommodation and transport inventory. Metha was candid about the challenge facing visitors planning a December trip.

“Connectivity is a challenge, infrastructure is a challenge. We don’t have enough beds to accommodate the number of tourists that want to come in,” he said. “If you want to make a booking for the Hornbill Festival today, I doubt you will get a hotel room or a taxi, because we have limited infrastructure, and our inventory is limited.”

Yet the demand continues to grow, including among international visitors and high-end travellers. The state is adding accommodation capacity each year, although Metha acknowledged that the pace remains limited compared to demand.

Sustainability is another part of the festival’s evolution. Metha described Hornbill as a “green festival”, pointing to waste management measures, a plastic-free zone and a sustainable fund to which tourists contribute. He also said the festival has undertaken green initiatives in partnership with organisations including UNPO and the Ministry of Renewable Energy.

For visitors, that makes the journey to Nagaland about more than attending a packed calendar of performances. The festival provides an entry point into the state’s music and cultural traditions, while homestays, village visits, hikes and outdoor experiences offer reasons to stay longer.

Ticket to Hornbill, meanwhile, is set to give Delhi audiences their first taste of that atmosphere in October, while creating a direct route for the country’s emerging musicians to reach the Hornbill stage in December.
