Stuck In Darjeeling Traffic? A Kurseong Ropeway Could Change The Journey

Darjeeling’s winding mountain roads are part of the charm, but during peak tourist season, they can turn a short hill journey into an hours-long ordeal. With traffic piling up on the narrow stretch between Kurseong and Darjeeling, the Bengal government is now considering a ropeway that could offer travellers a much faster way to reach the Queen of the Hills.

The proposed Kurseong-Darjeeling ropeway is expected to cover the journey in around 45 minutes, a significant reduction from the four to five hours that the 32-kilometre road stretch can take during busy periods. The project is currently at the feasibility stage, with the state government expected to invite private players to participate in its development.

A Faster Hill Connection

The proposed cable-driven transport system is estimated to cost around INR 3,000 crore and is likely to be developed under the Build Own Operate Transfer (BOOT) model. Under this public-private partnership structure, a private developer would finance, construct and operate the project for a specified period before transferring it to the government.

The ropeway is being considered primarily as a response to the traffic pressure on the road between Kurseong and Darjeeling. While travellers have several road options between Siliguri and Kurseong, the options become considerably limited once they move further uphill. NH110, also known as Hill Cart Road, remains the principal road connection between Kurseong and Darjeeling.

This bottleneck becomes particularly noticeable during holidays and peak tourist months. A journey from Siliguri to Kurseong can be completed relatively smoothly, only for the final section towards Darjeeling to take several additional hours. The proposed ropeway is intended to provide an alternative for tourists who would otherwise have to depend entirely on the road.

Stops Along The Route

The plan could include four or five ropeway stations between Kurseong and Darjeeling. These stops are expected to serve tourist areas and other popular locations along the route, potentially making the system useful beyond a simple point-to-point connection.

For visitors, the idea would be relatively straightforward: reach Kurseong by road and continue the uphill journey by cable car. Besides reducing the number of vehicles heading towards Darjeeling, the system could also offer a more predictable travel time during periods when road traffic is at its worst.

Building another road between the two hill stations has reportedly been considered impractical because of the challenging terrain. A ropeway, therefore, could provide an alternative without requiring another major road corridor through the hills.

The proposal also has a practical purpose beyond tourism. The government is considering using the ropeway at night to transport essential supplies such as food grains and vegetables to Darjeeling.

Beyond Tourist Travel

At present, trucks carrying supplies to Darjeeling contribute to the traffic load on the hill roads. Moving some of these goods by cable car after tourist hours could potentially reduce the number of heavy vehicles using the road during the day.

The proposed project is part of a wider plan to improve connectivity across the region through ropeway infrastructure. The Bengal government is also looking at a possible ropeway linking Kalimpong and Gangtok.

That proposal could become particularly relevant for travel between the hills of Bengal and Sikkim, where NH10 is the principal route connecting the region with Gangtok. The highway is vulnerable to landslides, which can lead to prolonged closures and disrupt travel.

The state government has indicated that the proposed projects could receive support from the Centre, particularly given the strategic importance of the region along the China border. For travellers, however, the immediate question is simpler: if the Kurseong-Darjeeling ropeway moves from planning to reality, a journey that can currently consume much of a day could become a 45-minute ride above the hills.
