Show your Mask Before you Travel, says Uber

Uber rolls out a new policy where riders have to take a selfie to show they are wearing masks before booking their cab

Cab rides are an inevitable part of our daily lives. During the pandemic, adopting the best safety measures on any kind of public transport is the way to go. To ensure greater safety, Uber has launched a new feature where it requires the riders to show they are wearing a mask by sending a selfie to their driver before getting into the vehicle. This new policy will roll out in a few weeks&rsquo time.

Though 99.5 percent of trips done so far did not have any mask issue or violation of safety protocol, the new policy, which features an in-app selfie capability, ensures compliance across the board. This is a move to ensure basic safety for both drivers and the rider. Earlier, riders would verify they are wearing a mask, and are healthy, through a checklist in the app.

Uber has said that riders will also have to sit in the back and keep windows open for better ventilation.

Since May, all drivers of Uber and Uber Eats have been mandated to wear masks at all times. The vehicles are sanitised regularly throughout the day and thermal screening for each driver is done at the start of the day.

Earlier, a plastic sheet divider between the driver and the rider had been introduced to ensure social distancing inside the car.
