Planning A Diwali Getaway? These Indian Destinations Are Seeing A Flight Booking Boom

From Agatti in Lakshadweep to Taipei in Taiwan, Gen Z travellers are driving a festive travel boom, with flight bookings and hotel stays recording sharp growth across India

Diwali has traditionally been a time to visit family, shop for the festive season and celebrate at home. But for many young Indians, the festival is becoming an opportunity to pack their bags and head somewhere new. From islands in Lakshadweep to lesser-known international destinations, travel is finding a bigger place in the festive calendar.

According to Cleartrip's PeekABoo travel trends tracker, flight bookings among travellers aged 15–24 have increased by 60 per cent ahead of Diwali 2026. Leisure hotel bookings have risen by 135 per cent, while several domestic and international destinations have recorded significant growth in flight bookings.

The numbers also point to a growing interest in destinations beyond the usual holiday circuit. If you are looking for somewhere different to travel this Diwali, these ten destinations offer a good place to start.

Why Is Everyone Travelling This Diwali?

The latest Cleartrip data suggests that travel is becoming a priority across age groups and accommodation budgets. Hotel bookings have increased across categories, with budget stays recording 201 per cent growth, followed by luxury properties at 162 per cent, mid-range accommodation at 148 per cent and premium hotels at 114 per cent.

Bus bookings have also risen, although these journeys largely reflect people travelling home for the festive season. Bookings increased across cities including Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, Chennai and Mumbai. At the same time, the rise in flight bookings among younger travellers points to a growing appetite for holidays.

There is, however, an important distinction between the numbers and the narrative around them. Social media discussions have linked the travel boom to young people borrowing money to fund holidays, but Cleartrip's report does not establish how these trips are being financed. What the figures do show is that more young Indians are booking flights and hotels for the festive season.

5 Domestic Destinations Seeing A Travel Boom

Agatti Islands, Lakshadweep

Agatti Islands in Lakshadweep leads Cleartrip's list of domestic destinations recording flight-booking growth ahead of Diwali, with bookings increasing by 130 per cent compared with the previous year. Known for turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and relaxing beaches, Agatti offers a different kind of festive break from crowded cities and busy hill stations. Visitors can explore the surrounding waters, go snorkelling or simply spend a few days enjoying the island's slower pace. Since travel to Lakshadweep requires planning around permits, transfers and limited accommodation, it is worth making arrangements well in advance.
