Paper dolls Souvenirs from Manipur

Paper dolls--modelled on the indigenous tribes of Manipur--are unique souvenirs to take home

Author : Precious Kamei

I don&rsquot usually stop and stare or go ga-ga over things or people but this couple did stop me in my tracks. On my recent visit to Imphal, for the Manipur Sangai Festival 2014, while taking the customary stroll by the handicraft stalls, I came across a cute tribal couple on display. No taller than 20cms, these paper dolls with their head gears and colourful attire &mdash some with weapons too &mdash represented each tribal community of the state. At Rs 300 per couple, they may seem a bit overpriced but I guess the cuteness will finally win over the wallet (the DIY versions are priced at Rs 150). These dolls are definitely great as a souvenir because they are &nbsplight, easy to fold and pack.
