Mizoram's Aizawl To Have A Rail Link By 2025

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line is set to put Mizoram on India's railway map with an expected commissioning by July next year. According to officials, about 93 per cent of the 51.38-km line is complete. This information was shared with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati during a review meeting with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

The line includes four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang. Officials informed the governor that the section up to Hortoki will be commissioned within the next few days following a successful trial run on the Bairabi-Hortoki section. Services to the Mualkhang station are also expected to start in the coming months. The final stretch to Sairang, near the state capital Aizawl, will be ready by July next year.

This railway project began construction in 2015 and is anticipated to boost Mizoram's economy and tourism industry significantly. Initially sanctioned in 2008-09, the project's revised cost is INR 8,213.72 crore. Starting at Bairabi on the Assam-Mizoram border, the line features 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges and 32 tunnels.

The completion of this project marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity and economic growth for Mizoram. It brings the state closer to the rest of the country through the railway network.
