Michelin Reveals Its 2026 Key Hotels, With 470 New Additions Worldwide

A good hotel can change the way you experience a destination, whether that means waking up beside a protected forest, setting out for a gorilla trek from your lodge, or spending an evening overlooking the Alps. Michelin’s latest hotel selection reflects just how varied that experience has become. Its 2026 MICHELIN Key selection adds 470 hotels across 79 destinations, taking the global total to 2,832 properties recognised for distinctive stays. The new additions range from remote island retreats and safari lodges to historic restorations and contemporary city hotels, while 10 countries and destinations receive MICHELIN Keys for the first time.

Introduced in 2024 as the hotel counterpart to the MICHELIN Guide’s restaurant Stars, the Keys are awarded following anonymous inspections. One Key denotes a very special stay, Two Keys an exceptional stay and Three Keys an extraordinary stay. The latest selection brings the total MICHELIN hotel selection to more than 9,400 properties worldwide, with more than 2,200 hotels having been added since the previous Key announcement in October 2025.

A Wider Hotel Map

This year’s expansion stretches across established hospitality markets as well as destinations appearing on the MICHELIN Key map for the first time. Armenia, Benin, Botswana, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Mongolia, Myanmar, Rwanda, Slovakia, and Zimbabwe have all received their first MICHELIN Key hotels. Europe and Asia recorded the largest growth, with notable additions across France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the UK, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia.

The numbers also show how broad the selection has become. Of the 2,832 MICHELIN Key hotels, 2,020 hold One Key, 657 have Two Keys and 155 have achieved Three Keys. Europe now accounts for 1,338 Key hotels across more than 35 destinations, while Asia and the Middle East have 600. Africa has 113, Oceania 92 and South America 94. The United States alone added 65 new Keys this year, with additions ranging from luxury resorts to smaller, characterful retreats.

Eighteen New Three Keys

The highest MICHELIN hotel distinction has welcomed 18 new properties in 2026. Six are in Asia, eight in Europe, two in Oceania, one in Africa and one in the Americas. Italy’s Borgo Santandrea on the Amalfi Coast has been promoted to Three Keys, while Southern Ocean Lodge in Australia has also moved up from Two to Three Keys. In the Maldives, Soneva Secret joins the top tier with its collection of 14 villas, each accompanied by a private chef.

Costa Rica has the only new Three-Key hotel in the Americas this year, with Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, promoted from Two Keys. Africa’s newest Three-Key property is Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch, adding another high-end wine-country stay to the continent’s growing selection. The new top-tier properties reflect the different ways hotels are approaching luxury, from highly personalised island stays to remote wilderness retreats and destination-led resorts.

Michelin has also highlighted four hotels through special awards. Desert Rock Resort in Umluj, Saudi Arabia, received the Architecture & Design Award for its integration into the Hijaz Mountains. Germany’s Schloss Elmau Luxury Spa Retreat & Cultural Hideaway received the Wellness Award, while Airelles Palladio Venice, overlooking the Giudecca Canal, was named Opening of the Year. South Africa’s Londolozi Game Reserve received the Local Gateway Award for its longstanding connection with the landscape and culture around Kruger.

New Destinations To Discover

Among the most notable newcomers is Ayan Zalaat in Mongolia, which opened in January on a 13.8-hectare private estate bordering the Bogd Khan Mountain protected area on the southern edge of Ulaanbaatar. The 32-room property combines access to the capital with the atmosphere of a mountain retreat, with a spa, indoor pool, private cinema, two-lane bowling alley and 10 restaurants and lounges. It gives travellers the option of exploring the city before returning to a more secluded setting.

Rwanda also enters the MICHELIN Key selection with One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, located near Volcanoes National Park at the foot of the Virunga Mountains. The property is well placed for mountain-gorilla trekking, while its experiences extend to local villages, conservation projects and talks about the gorilla families found in the surrounding landscape. Liechtenstein’s first Key goes to Park Hotel Sonnenhof, a 29-room family-run hotel above Vaduz with views of the Rhine Valley and the Alps.

The 2026 selection also reflects Michelin’s expanding presence in India and across Asia, where the new additions sit alongside established Key destinations. From remote safari camps and island resorts to urban hotels and restored heritage properties, this year’s list offers a broad look at how travellers are choosing to stay around the world. Rather than being limited to one definition of luxury, the MICHELIN Key selection increasingly places equal attention on setting, design, service, sense of place and the experience a hotel creates for its guests.
