Global Peace Continues To Decline

Overall, 99 countries became less peaceful over the past year, while only 62 improved. In fact, 119 countries are now less peaceful than they were when the index was first published in 2008.

Western and Central Europe continue to be the most peaceful regions in the world. Meanwhile, South Asia recorded the sharpest decline this year, driven by worsening conditions in Nepal and Pakistan.

Where Does India Rank?

India slipped three places to rank 127th out of 163 countries, with a score of 2.409.

According to the report, the decline was driven by increased tensions along its borders with Pakistan and Myanmar, along with continuing ethnic violence in Manipur. Bhutan remains South Asia's most peaceful country, ranking 16th globally.

Slovenia climbed two places this year. It is one of Europe's most underrated destinations and consistently records very low crime rates.

Switzerland remains a regular in the top three, thanks to its long-standing neutrality, political stability and high quality of life.

2. New Zealand (1.343)

New Zealand moved up to second place this year. Low violent crime, transparent governance and its distance from many global conflict zones continue to work in its favour.

1. Iceland (1.161)

Iceland has held the top spot for 19 consecutive years. With no standing army, very low crime rates and high levels of social trust, it remains the world's most peaceful country.
