Get Ready To Explore Dal Lake's New Lakefront This Winter

In a much-awaited development, the northern front of the iconic Dal Lake, spanning a pristine 5.1 kilometres, is on the brink of welcoming visitors before the onset of winter. The officials behind the Srinagar Smart City Project have been tirelessly working on this ambitious project since the beginning of the year, expecting a grand unveiling by the end of November.

Srinagar Smart City Project Nears Completion

Under the comprehensive Srinagar Smart City Project, which aims to transform the city into a modern and sustainable urban space, the development of the northern Dal Lake front has been a significant focal point. The project's Chief Executive Officer, Athar Aamir Khan, who also serves as the Srinagar Municipal Commissioner, expressed optimism that the work will be wrapped up well before the winter's first snowfall.

"This 5.1-kilometer-long Lake Front, stretching from Nishat to Habbak, is one of the most prominent endeavors within the Srinagar Smart City Project. The project is in its final stages, and we anticipate unveiling it within the next 40-50 days," Khan announced via a post on the popular microblogging platform X.

Khan emphasised the project's significance: "You can walk, cycle, sit, sip a cup of coffee, and enjoy the most pristine part of Dal Lake - the Hazratbal Basin." He also assured that the completion timeline will ensure that visitors can even revel in the beauty of the area covered in a blanket of snow during winter.

Srinagar Smart City's Remarkable Progress

With its 294 square kilometres of area and population of 13.5 lakhs, Srinagar was chosen as one of the cities to be part of the Smart City Mission, an initiative launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The city has witnessed significant transformations, with several projects successfully completed before the G20 event held earlier this year.

Some notable accomplishments include renovating the Airport road, introducing a flyover, and enhancing city-wide illumination. The historic Poloview market, established in 1952, underwent a modern revamp as part of the Smart City project and was inaugurated in May. It is Srinagar's first pedestrian-friendly and wire-free market, equipped with underground drainage, electricity, and communication systems. The Clock Tower and the MA road and Jhelum riverfront development were also key highlights.

Further enhancing the city's infrastructure and services, the Smart City project introduced smart electric buses with air-conditioning and surveillance cameras. A Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping initiative was successfully carried out, followed by physically verifying households and commercial establishments. The city's houses and shops have been fitted with unique digital door number plates featuring QR codes for efficient management and identification.

Meanwhile, Dal Lake now boasts a thrilling addition—water zorbing. This adventure activity allows enthusiasts to roll inside transparent, inflatable spheres on the lake's surface. While already popular in Sonamarg and Pahalgam, its introduction in Dal Lake has been warmly received by both locals and tourists. Water zorbing involves participants entering large, transparent, inflatable spheres called zorbs, which remain sealed, keeping participants dry as they roll, bounce, and spin on the water.
