Enjoy An Irish Film Festival

The Irish Film Festival takes place this weekend in Mumbai

The Irish Film Festival is curating a selection of four critically acclaimed Irish films at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) this weekend. Spanning genres and generations, these films delve into themes central to Ireland’s identity—from the mythical past and rural life to emigration and revolution. Featuring popular and celebrated works from four directors, this free-of-charge festival is a unique opportunity for cinephiles to experience the richness of Irish storytelling on the big screen.

The day starts with “The Secret of Kells,” an animated fantasy film about Brendan, a young monk-in-training who defies his strict uncle to illuminate the legendary Book of Kells. Blending Irish mythology with medieval history, this Oscar-nominated film is a visually spellbinding tale of courage, imagination and artistic heritage.

This is followed by “The Quiet Girl” (An Cailín Ciúin). Set in 1980s rural Ireland, this tender coming-of-age film follows a quiet nine-year-old girl from a troubled household who is sent to live with distant relatives for the summer.

Next is “The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” the winner of the 2006 Palme d’Or at Cannes. This powerful historical drama starring Cillian Murphy is set in 1920s Ireland during the War of Independence. It follows Damien, a young doctor who abandons his medical career to join his brother in the fight against British forces. As guerrilla resistance grows and a treaty is signed, the ensuing civil war turns comrades into enemies and divides families.

Finally, watch “Brooklyn,” an acclaimed period drama that tells the moving story of Eilis Lacey, a young Irish woman who immigrated to 1950s Brooklyn for a better future. Navigating homesickness and newfound love, she is swept into a romance that gives her life new meaning. It stars Saoirse Ronan in a career-defining performance.

Find Comfort In A Play

"Maa ki Chai" is a play that follows the journey of Yashwant and his conversation with two friends over the course of an evening

“Maa ki Chai” follows three friends having a conversation that changes everything over an evening. Their lighthearted banter underlies a deep undercurrent of loss, love and life’s unpredictable turns. When one friend shares the grief of losing his mother, their talk drifts into reflections on memories, mortality and the meaning of moving forward.

Tender, humorous and profoundly human, the play is the journey of Yashwant, his struggle to express emotions, his path to acceptance and realisation, and the shared warmth that keeps us going—much like a hot cup of chai on a cold day.

The Information | “Maa Ki Chai” Play

Date: August 31 | 7-8 PM

Venue: Artisan Coterie, Plot number 9, Malad, Chikuwadi, Malad West, Mumbai 400095
