Tucked away in the landscapes of southern China, the quiet village of Mililing has recently found itself in the limelight, thanks to its most illustrious son—Liang Wenfeng, the founder of the artificial intelligence firm DeepSeek. Once an unassuming settlement known primarily for agriculture and shoe production, Mililing has become an unexpected tourist destination, drawing visitors eager to see the humble beginnings of this IT prodigy.
Raised in Mililing by parents who were both elementary school teachers, Wenfeng attended the village’s modest primary school before moving on to the prestigious Wuchuan No. 1 Middle School. In 2002, he passed China’s notoriously difficult gaokao examinations, earning a coveted spot at Zhejiang University. His rise in the AI industry has cemented his legacy and cast a spotlight on his birthplace.
Since the beginning of this year, Mililing has seen an influx of visitors—tech enthusiasts, business professionals, families, and curious onlookers all making their way to the village. The sudden popularity, however, posed several challenges. With a population of just 700 and limited infrastructure, Mililing was unprepared for the surge in tourism. Complaints began to mount over inadequate roads, insufficient public facilities, and a general lack of amenities.
In response, local authorities swiftly enhanced the village's appeal. A comprehensive clean-up campaign was initiated, sewage systems were upgraded, and roads were expanded. As many as 29 houses had their facades renovated, while old, dilapidated structures were removed. The finishing touch? A fresh wave of greenery, with trees planted throughout the village, lending it an inviting charm. Today, Mililing is the birthplace of an AI pioneer and a scenic retreat with an intriguing backstory.
A stroll through Mililing offers a glimpse into its rich rural heritage. Lush fields stretch across the horizon, interspersed with small shoe-making workshops that have long been a part of the local economy. While the village remains true to its roots, subtle traces of modernity have crept in, with quaint cafes and souvenir shops springing up to cater to visitors. Those seeking an authentic experience can interact with friendly locals, who are more than happy to share stories about Wenfeng’s early years.
For travellers keen on exploring Mililing, getting there is a straightforward journey. The village is accessible via a short drive from Wuchuan, the nearest city, which is well-connected by rail and road. Visitors can also take a train to Guangzhou's provincial capital and then embark on a scenic road trip to Mililing. As this once-quiet village embraces its newfound recognition, it remains a testament to how one individual’s success can transform an entire community.
