Cloudburst Hits Uttarkashi’s Yamuna Valley, Homes Damaged But No Casualties Reported

A cloudburst struck the Yamuna Valley in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Saturday (Sep 6) evening, triggering flooding and mudslides in the Naugaon area. While debris buried a residential house and muddy waters from a swollen stream entered more than half a dozen homes, officials confirmed there was no loss of life.

District Magistrate Prashant Arya said the cloudburst occurred at Syori Phal Patti in Yamuna Valley. Sludge and debris rushed down from a flooded stream into low-lying areas, damaging property and disrupting daily life. “The district administration, along with teams from the State and National Disaster Response Forces, has launched a rescue operation. People from the affected households are being moved to safer places,” Arya said.

Many families had already vacated their homes, anticipating trouble due to heavy rains. Even so, damage was considerable. A mixer machine and several two-wheelers were washed away in the swollen Devalsari stream, while a car was buried under debris. In the Naugaon market area, a mudslide caused chaos as people scrambled for safety. The incident forced the temporary closure of the Delhi–Yamunotri highway, leaving vehicles stranded and traffic congested for hours.

A State Disaster Response Force team led by Barkot Inspector Rajesh Joshi quickly reached the site to carry out rescue and relief work. “Our priority was to evacuate residents to safe locations,” Joshi said.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took to Facebook soon after receiving updates on the damage. “On receiving information about the heavy rains in Naugaon, I immediately spoke to the district magistrate and directed him to conduct rescue and relief operations on a war footing. I have clearly instructed that affected people be taken to safe places and provided immediate assistance. I pray for everyone’s safety,” he wrote.

A Season Of Natural Disasters

Saturday’s cloudburst adds to a growing list of extreme weather events in Uttarakhand this monsoon. Just last week, heavy rains triggered multiple landslides and flash floods across the state. On August 29, cloudbursts in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri, and Bageshwar districts killed six people and left 11 missing, while a landslide in Chamoli’s Tharali on August 23 killed one woman and left another missing. Earlier in the season, on August 5, a flash flood in the Kheer Ganga river demolished nearly half of Dharali village on the Gangotri route and damaged an army camp in Harsil. Sixty-nine people missing in that disaster remain untraced.

The Kedarnath pilgrimage has also faced repeated disruptions. On September 2, a landslide at Munkatiya near Gaurikund killed two pilgrims and injured six others, forcing a three-day suspension of the yatra. Avalanches have been reported near Chorabari glacier in Kedarnath, though without casualties. Rising river levels in the Alaknanda, Mandakini, and Ganga have kept residents in Rudraprayag, Haridwar, and Rishikesh on alert.

Officials say the frequency of disasters reflects both the state’s fragile terrain and intensifying rainfall patterns. “Avalanches, cloudbursts, and landslides are natural in the Himalayas, but the scale and frequency this year have been alarming,” one disaster management officer said.

With the monsoon still active, Uttarakhand remains on high alert. Rescue teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts, and the government continues to urge residents not to venture near rivers or unstable slopes.

In Uttarkashi, relief operations are ongoing as authorities assess the extent of damage from Saturday’s cloudburst. While no lives were lost, the event has heightened anxieties in a region already battered by rain and natural disasters this season.
