A newly found stretch of the Qin Straight Road shows how ancient China built highways, moved armies, and ruled at scale

At first glance, it looks like an unremarkable strip of earth cutting quietly through northern China. But beneath the dust and scrub lies a road that once powered an empire. Chinese archaeologists have uncovered a remarkably well-preserved section of a 2,200-year-old imperial highway—an engineering feat so ambitious that it is now being described as the ancestor of the modern four-lane expressway.

The discovery brings fresh attention to the Qin Straight Road, a vast arterial route built during the Qin dynasty, when China was unified for the first time under Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Stretching nearly 900 kilometres at its peak, the road once connected the imperial capital of Xianyang, near present-day Xi’an, to Jiuyuan, now modern Baotou in Inner Mongolia. What has now emerged is a 13-kilometre section in Shaanxi province that offers rare, tangible proof of how advanced ancient Chinese infrastructure truly was.

Imperial Ambition Uncovered

Announced earlier this month after extensive fieldwork by the Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Institute of Yulin, the find confirms long-held historical accounts of a direct north–south highway built with astonishing speed and precision. Completed in just five years during the late third century BCE, the Qin Straight Road was designed to cut through mountains, fill valleys, and ignore natural obstacles in favour of absolute linearity.

What archaeologists have uncovered reads like a masterclass in pre-industrial engineering. The roadbed shows multiple layers of compacted earth, reinforced slopes built using rammed-earth techniques, carefully cut trench passages, and entire valleys filled in to maintain a level surface. With an average width of around 40 metres—and in places expanding to 60—it was wide enough to accommodate what we would now consider four lanes of traffic.

The straightness of the route is particularly striking. Even across rugged terrain, the road runs with near-geometric precision, underlining the Qin state’s obsession with efficiency, order, and control. This was not a road built for scenic detours; it was built to move armies, supplies, and authority at speed.

Engineering Ahead Time

Beyond its sheer scale, the road’s state of preservation has allowed researchers to study details rarely seen so clearly. Satellite imagery played a crucial role in identifying faint linear traces in areas that were once desert and have only recently been reforested. On the ground, archaeologists documented nine continuous trench sections arranged in a straight line, compacted traffic surfaces shaped by centuries of use, and layered earthworks designed to resist erosion.

Nearby, they also uncovered the remains of a small settlement believed to have functioned as a relay or courier station. Pottery fragments and roof tiles suggest it remained active across both the Qin and the succeeding Han dynasty, indicating that the road was not just a military corridor but part of a wider administrative and communication network.

In many ways, the Qin Straight Road functioned as the Great Wall’s mobile counterpart. While the Wall formed a static defensive barrier, the road enabled rapid troop deployment and logistical support against threats from northern nomadic groups such as the Xiongnu. Together, they formed the backbone of the empire’s northern defence strategy.

The rediscovery also sharpens our understanding of how infrastructure shaped early Chinese statehood. The Qin dynasty may have been short-lived, but its legacy was vast. Alongside monumental projects like the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army, the road network helped standardise governance across newly unified territories, supporting trade, communication, and military coordination on an unprecedented scale.

Ironically, history records that once imperial power weakened, the same road became a liability. Its directness made it easier for invaders to penetrate deep into Chinese territory, leading to deliberate destruction of sections during later periods. Over centuries, deserts advanced, landscapes shifted, and much of the route vanished from sight.

Parts of the Qin Straight Road were first rediscovered in the 1970s, and a section in Shaanxi was named among China’s top archaeological finds in 2009. This latest discovery, however, is among the clearest confirmations yet of the road’s original scale and sophistication.

More than two millennia later, the Qin Straight Road stands as a reminder that the idea of long-distance, high-speed connectivity is far older than asphalt and automobiles. Long before highways defined modern travel, an ancient empire had already mastered the art of building roads that could bind vast lands together—and make history move faster.
