Udaipur has long drawn travellers with its lakes, palaces and Aravalli views. Now, a new hospitality project is preparing to join the city’s growing collection of large-format resorts, with an emphasis on destination weddings, conferences, and leisure stays.

Black Rock Hotels & Resorts has announced Kingsbury Lake Island Resort, a 241-room property planned beside a lake and surrounded by hills. The project marks a significant step for the Rajasthan-based hospitality company, which has so far focused largely on operating hotels owned by other parties. With Kingsbury, it will take on ownership of a hotel asset while building on its experience in managing resorts and large-scale events.

The resort is scheduled to begin operations in February 15, 2027, initially with around 145 to 160 rooms (Phase 1). The remaining inventory is expected to come on stream as development progresses. Its planned facilities suggest that weddings and large social gatherings will be central to the property's business, alongside corporate meetings and leisure travel.

A Lakeside Resort Designed For Weddings And Conferences

The defining feature of Kingsbury is the scale of its proposed event infrastructure. The plans include two ballrooms measuring approximately 4,000 sq. ft. and 14,000 sq. ft., giving the property options for everything from smaller functions to large wedding receptions and corporate gatherings.

Outdoor venues will extend the celebrations beyond the banquet halls. The proposed 11,000 sq. ft. courtyard, 6,000 sq. ft. pool deck and 10,000 sq. ft. rooftop event space will provide different settings for ceremonies, receptions and social events. Three additional lakeside venues are planned, along with five garden spaces ranging from approximately 10,000 to 50,000 sq. ft.

For couples planning a destination wedding, this combination could be a major draw. Udaipur's appeal lies partly in its ability to turn the setting into an integral part of a celebration, with lakeside ceremonies, outdoor functions and elaborate evening receptions. A resort with several indoor and open-air venues can also accommodate different functions across a multi-day wedding without requiring guests to move between multiple properties.

The same infrastructure could appeal to the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) segment. Large ballrooms, outdoor event areas and accommodation within one property can make planning conferences, corporate retreats and private gatherings more straightforward.

However, the hotel has not yet publicly detailed its final room categories, suite configurations, restaurant names, culinary concepts, spa facilities or recreational offerings. These details, along with the completed design and service specifications, will be important in establishing how Kingsbury positions itself in Udaipur's competitive hospitality market.

Exploring Udaipur Beyond The Resort

A stay at Kingsbury will also put the spotlight on Udaipur as a destination for travellers seeking more than a wedding invitation or a conference itinerary. Founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of the Mewar kingdom, the city is known for its historic palaces, interconnected lakes and views of the Aravalli hills.

For first-time visitors, City Palace is a good place to begin. Its courtyards, balconies, towers and museum collections trace the history of Mewar's royal family. A boat ride on Lake Pichola offers views of the palace-lined waterfront and the island palaces of Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace, particularly striking around sunset.

Travellers can also head to Fateh Sagar Lake, known for its surrounding hills and boating experiences, or drive up to Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace for panoramic views across the city. For a closer look at regional arts and crafts, Shilpgram showcases the folk traditions and rural lifestyles of western India.

Food is another reason to spend time in the city. Visitors can seek out Rajasthani specialities such as dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi and laal maas at local restaurants, alongside the cafés and dining rooms that line the older parts of town. The city's markets are worth exploring, too, particularly for miniature paintings, textiles, jewellery and handcrafted souvenirs.

For Black Rock Hotels & Resorts, Kingsbury represents a shift in business strategy as much as a new address in Rajasthan. The company currently operates seven hotels with approximately 950 rooms and has outlined plans to add around 900 rooms across several projects through 2027. These include two signed properties in Jim Corbett and a project in Vrindavan.

The Udaipur resort's success will depend on how well its scale, location and eventual guest offerings translate into a compelling stay. Its wedding and conference facilities are already central to the plan; details of its restaurants, room categories and leisure amenities are still awaited. As the project moves towards its planned 2027 opening, those finishing touches will determine how it competes in a destination where the setting is often as important as the hotel itself.
