Belarus Opens E-Visa Access To Indians As Direct India Flights Are Planned

A European holiday could soon come with fewer visa hurdles for Indian travellers. Belarus has added India to the list of countries whose citizens can apply for an electronic visa, making it possible to complete the visa process online rather than relying entirely on traditional applications. The move was approved by the Council of Ministers of Belarus on September 14, 2026, following an initiative by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visa change comes at a time when Belarus is also looking to improve its air connectivity with India. Plans are underway for direct flights from Minsk to Mumbai and Goa, although the proposed routes have not yet been launched. Together, the e-visa facility and prospective air links could make Belarus more accessible to Indian tourists and business travellers.

Easier Entry For Indians

The new e-visa facility is part of a broader revision of Belarus' visa framework. Indian passport holders will be able to apply electronically, reducing the need to navigate the paper-heavy process traditionally associated with obtaining a visa. The updated rules also revise supporting-document requirements, amend application forms and clarify certain terminology and provisions relating to entry visas.

For Indian travellers, the development is particularly relevant because visa-free travel to Belarus has previously come with specific conditions. Indian citizens could enter the country without a traditional visa for up to 30 days when arriving and departing through Minsk National Airport, but this route required a valid multiple-entry Schengen or European Union visa with evidence of previous entry into a European country, along with a confirmed return ticket from Minsk within the permitted period.

Travellers who did not meet those requirements generally had to apply for a regular visa through the Belarusian Embassy, with supporting paperwork and, in certain cases, an invitation from a registered Belarusian travel agency or corporate host. The electronic route is expected to simplify this process, although detailed operational requirements for the new e-visa facility are still awaited.

More Direct Connections

Visa access is only one part of the equation. Belarus is also pursuing plans for direct air services between Minsk and two Indian cities, Mumbai and Goa. The proposed routes have not started yet, but their introduction could give travellers a more straightforward way to reach the country without relying on longer or more complicated connections.

The proposed flights are also significant beyond leisure travel. Belarus has identified India as an important market for business cooperation, and the easier visa process is intended to support activities such as B2B meetings, trade discussions, joint investment projects and other commercial exchanges. For tourism, improved connectivity could make it easier to consider Belarus as part of a wider Eastern European itinerary.

Belarus may not feature on the standard European holiday circuit, but its attractions span history, architecture, and the outdoors. Minsk, the capital, is a useful starting point, with landmarks including Independence Square, Victory Square, and the National Library of Belarus. The city also has museums, galleries, green spaces and Soviet-era architecture, offering a different urban experience from Western Europe's better-known capitals.

Beyond Minsk, the country's heritage sites provide plenty for history-focused travellers. Mir Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements, while the UNESCO-listed Nesvizh Palace is associated with the powerful Radziwiłł family and includes landscaped gardens and the Corpus Christi Church.

Brest Fortress offers another window into the country's past and is closely associated with the defence of Brest during World War II. For a change of pace, Braslav Lakes National Park brings together forests, islands, and hundreds of glacial lakes, with opportunities for kayaking and other outdoor activities.

With the e-visa now opening the door to Indian travellers and direct Minsk connections being planned from Mumbai and Goa, Belarus is positioning itself as a more accessible option for those looking to explore a less familiar corner of Europe.
