Air India Names Tewolde Gebremariam As New CEO, Begins Next Phase Of Global Expansion

Air India is getting a new pilot for its next leg of transformation. The airline has appointed veteran aviation executive Tewolde Gebremariam as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, with the former Ethiopian Airlines chief taking over from Campbell Wilson at a time when India’s flag carrier is moving beyond its initial turnaround phase and towards a more ambitious global expansion.

The appointment, announced by Air India’s Board of Directors on August 5, comes after a global search that considered both internal and external candidates. The Board was looking for an executive who could take on the complexities of running a large international airline while improving operational reliability, strengthening safety and service standards, and steering the carrier towards sustainable profitability.

Gebremariam arrives with an unusually extensive track record in doing just that. During his more than decade-long tenure as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, he oversaw a multi-billion-dollar expansion that transformed the carrier from a regional airline into Africa’s largest and one of its most profitable airline groups. Under his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines grew its revenue more than fourfold, while its fleet nearly tripled.

His tenure at Ethiopian Airlines was also marked by the development of Addis Ababa as a major international aviation hub connecting Africa with destinations across the world.
