Indian Railways is set to launch the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, promising a more comfortable and faster option for long-distance travellers. The train is expected to operate between Delhi and Patna via Prayagraj, covering the route in around 11.5 hours. According to reports, services are likely to commence ahead of Diwali 2025, making it a festive-season debut for this next-generation sleeper train.
The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is expected to significantly ease congestion on the high-demand New Delhi–Patna route, one of India’s busiest corridors—especially during festive seasons when thousands travel from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to the capital. Designed for faster and more comfortable overnight journeys, the train aims to enhance regional connectivity and improve passenger experience.
Reports also suggest that similar sleeper variants of the Vande Bharat could soon be introduced on other major routes, including Delhi–Ahmedabad and Delhi–Bhopal, as Indian Railways expands the next generation of long-distance travel options.
Designed for comfort and speed, the train is projected to cut the usual 12 to 17-hour journey between Patna and New Delhi to just 11.5 hours. According to reports, it will likely depart Patna at 8 PM and arrive in Delhi by 7:30 AM, offering passengers a faster and smoother alternative on one of India’s busiest routes.
Unlike the current chair-car Vande Bharat trains, the new sleeper version will feature berths, making it more suitable for long-distance, overnight travel. It will run at a maximum speed of 180 km/h and is expected to be priced about 10–15 per cent higher than the Rajdhani Express, offering enhanced services in return.
Manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) using advanced Integral Coach Factory (ICF) technology, the train will also come equipped with modern amenities such as CCTV surveillance, LED infotainment screens, automatic doors with safety sensors, on-board announcements, and cutting-edge fire safety systems.
The interiors are being designed with an aircraft-style finish, aiming to provide a premium experience for travellers. With this launch, Indian Railways hopes to expand Vande Bharat’s presence on long-haul routes, meeting growing demand for efficient and comfortable overnight train travel.
The Vande Bharat Express, India’s flagship semi-high-speed train, has faced several controversies since its launch, highlighting both technical and public concerns.
