The much-loved Van Rani, the iconic miniature train of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), is set to return to service by the end of September after a hiatus of over four years. A long-time favourite since its debut in 1970, the train was suspended in May 2021 following extensive damage caused by Cyclone Tauktae. Now, the forest department is introducing a modern, battery-operated version featuring four Vistadome carriages, offering passengers sweeping views of the park’s lush surroundings.

A Modern Makeover For A Classic

The Van Rani is making a return—but not as the train generations of visitors remember. Instead of the original diesel-powered engine with its modest three-coach setup and nostalgic appeal, a brand-new, battery-operated version will soon glide through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

The entire 2.3 km track has been rebuilt from the ground up, including the reconstruction of all 15 bridges along the route. The transformation ensures a smoother, safer ride for passengers. At Krishnagiri Station, construction of the building, platform, and accessibility ramps is complete, with final touches currently in progress. Meanwhile, Teenmurthy Station's platform is ready, and the station shed is on track for completion by July 25.

Final Testing Done, Launch Set For This Month

Officials have confirmed that both the technical inspection and a passenger trial run were successfully completed in July this year, marking a major milestone in the project. According to reports, minor finishing touches are currently underway, but park authorities remain confident that the erstwhile toy train will be operational before September ends.

The project has seen a significant investment of over 43 crore rupees, covering the cost of the new battery-operated train as well as major civil works, including the construction of new stations and track upgrades. The infrastructure development has been overseen by the Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), ensuring modern standards are met.

Originally scheduled for a late 2024 relaunch, the project was later fast-tracked to July–August this year. However, minor delays pushed the timeline once again. Despite this, officials remain optimistic that the final deadline will be met and that visitors will soon enjoy an upgraded ride through the park’s scenic landscape.

The new Van Rani isn’t just a mode of transport—it’s an experience. Passengers can look forward to panoramic views of the Deer Park, interpretive wildlife panels, and a journey that highlights the ecological richness of the park.

A Ride Through SGNP

The toy train’s 2.7-kilometre narrow-gauge track winds its way through Krishnagiri Upavan, a 5.5 sq km expanse within Sanjay Gandhi National Park that has been set aside as a public recreation zone. Along the route, passengers are treated to glimpses of the park’s rich biodiversity, including native flora and fauna.

Tucked within the vibrant metropolitan sprawl of Borivali in Mumbai, Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a remarkable natural haven. Spanning approximately 87 square kilometres, this unique urban national park draws over two million visitors every year, offering an extraordinary escape into nature without ever leaving one of the busiest cities in the world.

The park is celebrated for its incredible biodiversity. The park is home to a vast array of wildlife, including leopards, reptiles, butterflies, and a wide variety of plant species. It shelters over 270 species of birds and more than 30 species of mammals, making it an important ecological reserve as well as a site of scientific interest. The dense greenery and undisturbed habitats provide a refuge for countless species, many of which are rarely seen elsewhere in the city.

Echoes of the Past

Beyond its natural appeal, the park holds significant historical value. One of its most fascinating features is the Kanheri Caves, a complex of ancient rock-cut caves dating back to the 1st century BC. Once used by Buddhist monks as prayer halls, monasteries, and dwellings, these caves offer visitors a compelling glimpse into India’s spiritual and architectural heritage.

The region’s importance predates even the Kanheri Caves, with archaeological evidence suggesting that early trade routes between the ancient ports of Sopara and Kalyan passed through these forests as far back as the 4th century BC. This historical layering adds a profound cultural depth to the park’s natural beauty.
