Paying for a morning coffee in Madrid, hopping onto the metro, picking up souvenirs in Barcelona or buying tickets to a museum could soon become as effortless for Indian travellers as it is back home. Spain is moving closer to joining the growing list of countries where UPI may be accepted, allowing visitors from India to simply scan a QR code and pay using their preferred app.

The development follows an agreement between India and Spain to begin technical discussions on linking India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Bizum, Spain's widely used digital payment platform. While the integration is still at an early stage and no timeline has been announced, it marks another step in India's efforts to expand its homegrown digital payments network across international destinations.

The discussions were initiated during Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's visit to Spain as part of his Europe tour from July 13 to 18. During the visit, he met senior Spanish officials, including First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business Carlos Cuerpo Caballero and Minister of Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu Boher. Among the various areas of collaboration discussed, digital payments emerged as one of the key focus areas, with both countries agreeing to explore interoperability between UPI and Bizum.

Talks Begin Now

The discussions were initiated during Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's visit to Spain as part of his five-day Europe tour from July 13 to 18. During the visit, Goyal met senior Spanish officials, including Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, Spain's First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, and Jordi Hereu Boher, Spain's Minister of Industry and Tourism.

Among the many areas of cooperation discussed between the two countries, digital payments emerged as a key focus. India and Spain have now agreed to begin the technical work required to make UPI interoperable with Bizum, one of Spain's most widely used mobile payment platforms. The discussions will focus on ensuring that both systems can communicate securely, comply with regulatory requirements, and offer seamless payment processing.

If the integration moves forward successfully, Indian travellers could eventually use their existing UPI apps in Spain without downloading a local payment application or relying exclusively on international credit and debit cards. It would also eliminate much of the inconvenience associated with foreign exchange, cash withdrawals and forex cards, all of which often come with additional fees or less favourable exchange rates.

For many Indian travellers, UPI has become an integral part of daily life. Whether paying a roadside tea vendor, booking a cab, splitting a restaurant bill or shopping at local markets, the scan-and-pay system has transformed how payments are made. The prospect of extending the same convenience to international travel is likely to appeal to both leisure and business travellers.

What Changes Ahead

For now, however, travellers should note that nothing changes immediately. UPI payments are not yet available across Spain, and the proposal remains in the discussion phase.

Before the service can go live, officials from both countries will need to complete extensive technical and regulatory work. This includes establishing payment standards, settlement mechanisms, security protocols, compliance frameworks and interoperability between financial institutions. Details regarding participating banks, supported payment apps and rollout plans are also yet to be announced.

Even so, the discussions indicate the growing confidence in cross-border digital payment partnerships. As countries increasingly embrace cashless transactions, interoperable payment systems could make international travel significantly more convenient by reducing dependence on physical currency and simplifying everyday spending abroad.

The proposal also reflects India's broader ambition to position UPI as a global payment network. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform has rapidly evolved from a domestic payment solution into one that is steadily finding acceptance beyond India's borders.

Spain is not the only country on India's digital payments roadmap. During the same Europe visit, India also explored fintech collaboration and the possibility of linking UPI with Estonia's payment ecosystem.

Meanwhile, UPI has already established a presence across several international markets. Indian travellers can currently use UPI-enabled payment services in destinations including France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Qatar. More recent collaborations have also expanded its reach to countries such as Japan, Cambodia and Malaysia, further strengthening its international footprint.

Each new partnership brings Indian travellers one step closer to carrying less cash and relying on familiar payment methods while overseas. For destinations that attract a growing number of Indian visitors, integrating with UPI also presents an opportunity to make spending easier and more accessible for one of the world's fastest-growing outbound travel markets.

Although Spain's integration is still some distance away from becoming operational, the fact that both countries have officially begun technical discussions marks an important milestone. If the project moves ahead as planned, Indian travellers could soon find that paying for tapas in Madrid, museum tickets in Seville or souvenirs in Barcelona feels no different from making a purchase back home.
