In a move aimed at bolstering wildlife conservation and empowering local communities, the government of Odisha has officially declared Similipal, nestled within the Mayurbhanj district, as a National Park. This landmark decision, enacted under the provisions of Section 35(4) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, makes Similipal India's 107th National Park and establishes it as the largest such protected area within the state, encompassing a substantial 845.70 sq km.
The announcement, made by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) of Odisha, is poised to reinforce the ecological heritage of the Similipal region, renowned for its rich biodiversity, including the melanistic or black tiger.
As per Forest department data, this Odisha-based national park houses 40 wild tigers, including several melanistic ones. It is also home to 25 per cent of Odisha’s elephant population, 104 species of orchid, and around 360 species of birds. The National Tiger Conservation Authority, a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, notes around 55 species of mammals, 62 species of reptiles, 21 species of amphibians, 38 species of fish, 164 species of butterflies, and many species of insects and micro fauna.
Beyond its crucial role in wildlife conservation, Similipal boasts a diverse and captivating landscape. The park's terrain features rolling hills and valleys, dense forests, and expansive grasslands. Numerous rivers and streams meander through the reserve, adding to the park's ecological richness. This includes Meghasani and Khairiburu, two significant peaks within the park.
Furthermore, Similipal National Park also houses stunning waterfalls. Take Barehipani Falls, for instance. Dubbed as India's tallest, this waterfall plunges from a height of 339 m amid dense forests. The Joranda Falls, another majestic waterfall, drops from 150 m. Other notable waterfalls in the park include Uski, Olkudar, Sitakund, and Deokund.
How To Reach: The nearest major airport is Bhubaneswar (BBI), which has good connectivity with major metropolitan cities in India. From Bhubaneswar, Similipal National Park is approximately a five hour drive. Alternatively, you can reach Balasore or Baripada by train, which are closer railway stations, and then hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the park's entry points.
Best Time To Visit: The best time to visit Similipal National Park is generally from October to May. During this period, the weather is pleasant, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for wildlife spotting and exploring the park.
The park typically remains closed during the monsoon season (roughly June to September) due to heavy rainfall, which makes many areas inaccessible.
