Rishikesh has long drawn travellers to the banks of the Ganga for yoga, meditation, spiritual retreats, and white-water rafting. Now, Marriott International is preparing to add another name to the destination’s hospitality landscape. The company has signed an agreement with Himalayan Bliss Spa & Resorts to bring Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts to the Uttarakhand town, with the proposed Le Méridien Rishikesh Resort & Spa scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2028.

The planned 120-key property will combine the brand’s contemporary European-inspired design sensibility with elements drawn from Rishikesh’s cultural heritage. Its proposed facilities include a spa, fitness centre, swimming pool, all-day dining restaurant, lobby lounge and dedicated spaces for meetings and events. A kids’ club and activity centre are also on the plans, positioning the resort to cater to leisure travellers, families and visitors seeking wellness experiences.

A Contemporary Resort Shaped By Rishikesh’s Cultural Identity

The proposed resort will feature 120 contemporary guest rooms and suites, although the announcement does not yet specify room categories, individual room amenities or views. Its design is expected to bring together Le Méridien’s mid-century modern aesthetic and architectural and decorative influences drawn from Rishikesh’s cultural heritage.

The concept fits the brand’s wider approach to hospitality. Founded in Paris in the 1960s, Le Méridien draws on European travel culture, art and design, with an emphasis on locally inspired food and experiences. Its hotels also incorporate creative public spaces and programming that encourages guests to engage with the destination.

At Rishikesh, the proposed all-day dining restaurant and lobby lounge will form the resort’s principal food and beverage venues. The announcement does not name the restaurants, specify their cuisines or confirm whether additional speciality dining outlets are planned. However, the destination offers plenty of culinary inspiration, from North Indian staples and Garhwali preparations to the café culture that has developed around its yoga and backpacking communities.

Wellness will be another important part of the property's planned offering. A dedicated spa and fitness centre are on the development plans, alongside a swimming pool for recreation. Families can look forward to a kids’ club and activity centre, while meeting and event spaces could make the resort an option for group gatherings and organised retreats. The operator has yet to announce specific spa therapies, yoga programmes, guided excursions or other signature activities for the property.

Kiran Andicot, Senior Vice President, South Asia, Marriott International, said the agreement would strengthen the company's presence in India's spiritual destinations. He added that the brand's contemporary design and immersive programming would encourage travellers to experience Rishikesh through its natural beauty and cultural significance.

Girish Agarwal, Designated Partner, Himalayan Bliss Spa & Resorts LLP, said the development was expected to create hundreds of direct jobs and employment opportunities for local youth once the resort opens.

From Ganga Aarti To Rafting: Exploring Rishikesh Beyond The Resort

For travellers, much of Rishikesh's appeal lies in the variety of experiences available within the same trip. The town is known internationally for yoga and meditation, with ashrams, riverside practices and wellness programmes drawing visitors throughout the year. Its position at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas also makes it a starting point for exploring the surrounding landscape.

The proposed resort is expected to offer access to several of the area's best-known landmarks, including the Beatles Ashram and Triveni Ghat. At Triveni Ghat, the evening Ganga Aarti brings together devotional chanting, lamps and ritual offerings along the riverbank. It is one of the town's defining cultural experiences and a fitting introduction to its spiritual traditions.

At the former Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram, popularly known as the Beatles Ashram, visitors can explore the site associated with the band's 1968 visit to Rishikesh. The complex's meditation spaces and graffiti-covered structures offer a glimpse into the meeting of Indian spiritual traditions and international counterculture. Nearby, Ram Jhula connects areas known for their ashrams, temples, and small shops.

Travellers seeking something more active can head to the Ganga for white-water rafting, with popular stretches around Shivpuri and other riverside locations. Kayaking and trekking are also available in the surrounding region, while Mohanchatti is known for adventure activities such as bungee jumping. Activities should be arranged through authorised operators, with conditions and seasonal restrictions checked before departure.

The resort's spa and fitness facilities may appeal to guests who prefer a wellness-focused itinerary, although the specific treatments and programmes have not yet been announced. Visitors can also explore local temples, attend yoga classes at established ashrams or plan excursions into the surrounding hills.

Connectivity is another consideration for the proposed development. According to the announcement, the resort will be accessible by road, with Jolly Grant Airport approximately 20 kilometres away. The exact address and access arrangements have not yet been disclosed.

With its opening planned for the final quarter of 2028, Le Méridien Rishikesh Resort & Spa remains a development project rather than an operating hotel. Room details, tariffs, restaurant concepts and bookable experiences are yet to be announced. If delivered as planned, it will add another internationally branded resort to a destination that attracts pilgrims, yoga practitioners, adventure travellers and visitors interested in the cultural landscape of Uttarakhand.
