India’s largest airline, IndiGo, will begin charging a fuel surcharge on domestic and international tickets from March 14 after a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The airline said the additional levy will vary between INR 425 and INR 2,300 depending on the route and distance travelled.

Fuel Surcharge By Route

For domestic services and flights within the Indian subcontinent, the airline will levy a fuel surcharge of INR 425, according to a statement issued on Friday. Passengers travelling on routes to West Asia will pay INR 900.

The surcharge will rise to INR 1,800 for services to South East Asia, China and Africa, while flights to Europe will attract the highest levy of INR 2,300.

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) makes up almost 40 per cent of an airline’s operating expenses. IndiGo said the increase in aviation turbine fuel prices due to the ongoing conflict would normally require a much steeper adjustment in fares, but the airline had opted for a smaller surcharge to limit the additional burden on passengers. “While offsetting the entire impact of this fuel price surge requires a very substantial adjustment to fares, IndiGo has introduced a relatively smaller amount as a fuel charge, keeping in mind the consequential burden on customers,” the airline said.

Air India and Air India Express began applying fuel surcharges on tickets from March 10. For domestic flights and services to SAARC countries, the surcharge will be INR 399 per ticket for bookings made after March 11, while flights to and from West Asia will carry a levy of USD 10.

For routes to South East Asia and Africa, Air India will raise the existing surcharge by 50 per cent, bringing the charges to USD 60 and USD 90 respectively.

A second phase of increases, starting with bookings from March 18, will cover flights to Europe, North America, and Australia. The surcharge for Europe-bound flights will rise by 25 per cent to USD 125, while those to North America and Australia will increase by a third to USD 200.

The airline attributed the hike to constrained oil and fuel supplies through the Strait, which have driven up prices sharply.
