Delhi is set to reinvent sightseeing with the launch of electric double-decker tourist buses that will connect the capital’s most celebrated heritage sites. With a target launch date of approximately February 20, 2026, this programme will create a new way for both domestic and international visitors to experience and appreciate both the historical and contemporary landmarks of Delhi by providing them with a unique opportunity to take part in guided tours as part of a larger government initiative promoting tourism in the region.
In order to increase interest in heritage tourism, the Government of Delhi has developed an initiative to operate double-decker buses on a designated tourist route that concentrates on displaying Delhi’s heritage and cultural sites. The project forms part of chief minister Rekha Gupta’s recent budget announcement that prioritised a national landmark-centric tourist experience designed to enhance Delhi’s appeal as a must-visit destination.
Officials say the buses are aimed at providing a seamless, enjoyable sightseeing experience that showcases the city’s rich history and contemporary significance. Elevated seating on these buses will give passengers panoramic views of Delhi’s iconic attractions.
Officials have announced that the double-decker tour bus service will be operational starting February 20. As part of the opening day, there will be two electric buses, one of which is an open-air double-decker, and the other will include an option for tours in the evening.
The two buses will have a designated route that connects some of the most prominent heritage and cultural sites throughout Delhi. In addition to other stops along the way, the double-decker buses will stop at the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, the National War Memorial, Bharat Mandapam, the New Parliament Building, Kartavya Path, and Dilli Haat.
The final stops will cover the Lutyens area of central Delhi, where the wide roads and higher clearances will allow the electric double-deckers to operate at their full height during their trip.
The cost of this unique sightseeing tour will be approximately INR 500 for adults and INR 300 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. There will also be onboard guides on each bus who will share information about the locations' historical and cultural significance, making it both a fun and educational experience.
The electric double-decker buses have been manufactured by Ashok Leyland as part of a corporate social responsibility project. Originally part of the transport department, the buses are now being operated by the Tourism Department of the city on this sightseeing trail.
These electric buses align with the sustainability goals of the city of Delhi and encourage longer stays for guests to enjoy the overall tourism experience.
The tourism department is developing plans for tours to be offered at night, providing guests with an opportunity to view illuminated landmarks after museum hours. Nighttime tours will be along routes that have largely been identified, and operational hours will be announced before the official launch of nighttime tours.
