Take a stroll along the iconic Park Street on an hour-long guided tour, celebrating its nostalgic and historic charm. It remains Kolkata’s vibrant commercial and entertainment hub, famed for its colonial architecture and timeless elegance. The street is home to notable landmarks such as the Asiatic Society, St. Xavier’s College, and the South Park Street Cemetery, each echoing tales of the city’s rich past.

Once the centre of Kolkata’s glamorous nightlife in the 1950s and 60s, Park Street still exudes a unique blend of history and modernity. The walk will be followed by a 30-minute book reading from “Park Street Theke Phire Dekha” by Pulak Kumar Chakraborti, a memoir capturing the street’s upmarket mansions and bygone era. Participants will also enjoy a tea or coffee accompanied by a slice of pizza at Kulture – Specialty Coffee & Bistro.

'Literary Activism' at Kolkata Centre for Creativity

Celebrating a decade of Literary Activism, this special session of Fridays at Kolkata Centre for Creativity highlights a critical alternative to the literary currents of globalisation. Born from annual symposia since 2014, a dedicated website, and a publishing imprint at Ashoka University’s Centre for the Creative and the Critical, Literary Activism creates a space for dialogue among writers, artists, translators, publishers, and academics. Unlike conventional activism, it embraces serious play, prioritising creative exploration over immediate outcomes, fostering dissent, delight, and reflection beyond festivals and book launches. Speakers Amit Chaudhuri, Samik Bandopadhyay, Ranajit Das, and Oindrilla Maity, with moderator Madeleine St John, will discuss the roots of this space and examine how globalisation has transformed literary life across languages.

A Solo Journey into Memory, Identity, and the Body

As part of AMI Arts Festival 2025, the Kolkata Centre for Creativity will this weekend present Maas, a compelling solo performance by Jyoti Dogra, one of India’s leading voices in contemporary theatre. Stripped to its essentials—body, memory, and voice—the performance is minimal yet profoundly immersive. Through her intensely physical and raw style, Dogra delves into the delicate yet unbreakable connections between memory, identity, and the body as a vessel of trauma and resilience. Personal stories merge with broader cultural narratives, revealing the tension, vulnerability, and beauty of inhabiting both flesh and history.

Step Into A Tapestry of Cultures and Hidden Histories

Calcutta has long been a melting pot, and even after three centuries, the city has held on to its ethnic and cultural diversity. From quaint Chinese shrines to Armenian churches, the streets are full of unexpected marvels. Meandering through narrow, winding lanes, one may stumble upon atmospheric synagogues or the charming serenity of a Burmese Buddhist temple, each corner telling a story of the city’s cosmopolitan past. This walk takes on special significance today, in an era where political narratives often seek to project a monochrome, homogenised vision of India, reminding us instead of the vibrant plurality that has defined Calcutta for centuries.
