Luxury Label Boito Announces Exhibition On Odisha's Spectacular Craftsmanship Techniques

Boito, the conscientious luxury label devoted to preserving and reimagining Odisha’s rich textile heritage, has announced an upcoming exhibition at Whalesong, the celebrated art and design gallery in Parra, Goa.

The luxury label is known for using raw textile pieces to create contemporary high-fashion silhouettes for a global audience. Each garment is designed to be an heirloom piece, drawing deep inspiration from Odisha’s vibrant traditions. Titled “Odisha in Ceremony,” the exhibition is an ode to the ceremonies from the land of artists, with a primary focus on outerwear such as trench coats, jackets and kimonos. The collection will also include a selection of accessories and gifts, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship from the state.

The following textiles and crafts will be featured in this collection:

• Bomkai: Renowned for its complexity, Bomkai artisans employ both extra warp/weft and bandha techniques to achieve distinct jala designs.

• Dhokra: An indigenous metal craft using the traditional lost-wax casting method.

• Kapdaganda: Shawls embroidered by the women of the Dongria Kondh community, reflecting the community’s reverence for nature and harvest, with motifs and colours representing the sacred Niyamgiris.

• Khandua: Employs the single ikat bandha resist dying technique, using a complex mathematical system to incorporate curvilinear patterns.

• Kotpad: Known for its distinct palette of reds, maroons and browns, it is achieved using natural dyes extracted from the local aal tree (Indian madder).

• Pipli: A vibrant appliqué technique that perfectly showcases Odisha’s love for colour.

• Ringa: Traditionally made using jungle fibre from the kerang tree, ringas are woven on rudimentary looms and worn as loincloths by women of the Bonda community.

• Sambalpuri: Double ikat bandha technique with motifs inspired by ancient board games, mythology and prosperity.

Richa Maheshwari, the founder of Boito, said, “We are thrilled to be making our first foray into Goa at Whalesong this December. From one coast to another, we hope to create an immersive experience mirroring Odisha's slow-paced approach to life and art so instrumental in the perseverance of tradition. Folklore will be narrated through craft, with signature pieces from our collection.”
