Hampi

Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, is a mesmerising blend of ancient ruins, temple complexes, and dramatic landscapes that reflect the glory of the Vijayanagara Empire. Highlights include the majestic Virupaksha Temple, the elegant Lotus Mahal, and the regal Elephant Stables, all nestled within the Royal Enclosure. For panoramic views, a trek up Matanga Hill at sunrise or sunset is a must. Visitors can explore the ruins by foot or bicycle, or take a coracle ride along the Tungabhadra River for a unique perspective. Hampi comes alive during its vibrant annual festivals. The Hampi Festival (also known as Vijaya Utsav), held in early November, is the most popular. It spans three days of music, dance, puppet shows, and a grand procession showcasing the region’s cultural heritage. The Purandaradasa Aradhana, celebrated in January/February, is a classical music festival commemorating the birth anniversary of the 16th-century poet-composer Purandaradasa. Hampi’s cuisine features Karnataka’s earthy flavours — try local favourites like Bisi Bele Bhaath, Jolada Roti, and traditional thalis served in rustic eateries. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather is ideal for sightseeing. With its rich history, spiritual depth, and scenic beauty, Hampi offers a timeless journey into India’s glorious past.
