Sufi art is more than aesthetic expression—it is a spiritual journey. Rooted in themes of divine love, unity, and ego transcendence, it appears across forms from poetry to sculpture. From Rumi’s verses to Parviz Tanavoli’s bronzes, Sufi art speaks in many tongues but with one mystical voice. For the first time, this rich tradition has been given a dedicated space in the heart of Europe.

The Musée d’Art et de Culture Soufis MTO (MACS MTO)—just outside Paris—invites visitors into the world of Sufism through art, culture, and contemplation. Set along the Seine in Chatou, it is the first museum of its kind, bringing together centuries of Sufi heritage with contemporary artistic expression in a setting designed for both beauty and reflection.

Unveiling The Mystical Soul Of Sufism

The Musée d’Art et de Culture Soufis MTO (MACS MTO) is the first museum in France—and the world—dedicated entirely to the art and culture of Sufism, a spiritual tradition still relatively little-known in the country. Opened in September 2024, the museum is housed in a carefully restored 19th-century mansion in Chatou, Yvelines, along the banks of the Seine.

MACS MTO offers more than a display of beautiful objects—it is conceived as a platform for cultural exchange, social interaction, and spiritual discovery. Its permanent collection features nearly 300 symbolic, decorative, and everyday objects that bring Sufi teachings and aesthetics to life. These range from rare manuscripts and embroidered textiles to ceramic mosaics, musical instruments, and intricate calligraphy.

In addition to its historical collection, the museum presents a lively programme of contemporary art exhibitions, talks, events, and workshops. Together, they reveal the profound influence of Sufism on global culture—from the poetry of Rumi that shaped musical traditions across centuries, to its enduring presence in architecture, philosophy, and design.

Inside The Museum: A Journey Through Sufi Art and Symbolism

The museum’s collection is drawn from the archives of the Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi (MTO) Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism, which operates centres across six continents. From this vast cultural reserve, the museum showcases hundreds of symbolic, decorative, and everyday Sufi objects, many of which are rarely seen outside private collections. Highlights include:

  • Kashkūls – beautifully decorated alms bowls that symbolise the renunciation of materialism and openness to divine wisdom. These are among the most visually striking and spiritually loaded items in the collection.

  • Khirqa – a ceremonial cloak, richly embroidered in purple and yellow velvet with gold thread, traditionally passed on to a Sufi initiate by their master. One 20th-century example on display was gifted to the current MTO master.

  • Silsila – genealogical scrolls tracing the spiritual lineage of Sufi masters.

  • Mihrabs, walking sticks, carpets, and sculptures, each holding symbolic meaning within Sufi practice.

One of the most engaging elements of the exhibition is an interactive hologram of Hazrat Shah Maghsoud Sadegh Angha, a renowned 20th-century Iranian Sufi master, scholar, and poet. Seated in his library, he speaks about Sufism—offering visitors a direct and personal introduction to Sufi philosophy.

Beyond historical artefacts, the museum seeks to create a dialogue between traditional Sufi principles and contemporary artistic expression. Through rotating exhibitions, installations, and events, MACS MTO brings Sufism into conversation with today’s global cultural landscape—highlighting its continued relevance in questions of identity, belonging, and transcendence.
