A Sanctuary Of Stillness: Inside Pema Wellness, Where Nature And Inner Healing Come Together
What began as a deeply personal quest to heal a loved one has evolved into one of India’s most nurturing wellness sanctuaries. For Meena Mulpuri, Founder of Pema Wellness, healing has never been about quick fixes—it’s about deep reconnection. Nestled between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, Pema draws on nature’s rhythm and the five koshas to guide each guest through a transformative journey of self-remembrance. Blending naturopathy, yogic science, and modern therapies like ozone and quartz healing, the retreat is designed to support all layers of being—physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual. In this interview, Mulpuri shares the heart behind Pema and how presence, care, and a return to simplicity form the foundation of lasting wellbeing.
Pema Wellness feels deeply personal in its vision. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind its founding—and what healing means to you on a personal level?
This journey didn’t begin as a business—it began as a deeply personal mission. When a beloved family member faced a serious health crisis, and conventional medicine reached its limits, we turned to natural therapies. The transformation we witnessed was remarkable. What began as a search soon became a passion. We dove into research—exploring evidence-based nutrition, ancient healing systems, and modern longevity science. We tested protocols, refined practices, and shared what we learned with friends, colleagues, and our wider circle. Lives began to change. Slowly, what started as an intimate intervention grew into a quiet movement.
The next step was to create a space—a sanctuary. Not just a centre for services but a home for healing. A place where ancestral wisdom and modern diagnostics coexist and where the human experience is supported—not just treated. For us, healing isn’t just the absence of illness. It’s a return to vitality, clarity, and possibility.
Naturopathy is at the heart of your wellness approach. How do you balance ancient yogic and nature-based practices with modern therapies like ozone and quartz healing?
At Pema, healing is a dialogue between tradition and innovation. We begin with the body’s own intelligence—an understanding rooted in Naturopathy and Yogic sciences. Practices like therapeutic fasting, hydrotherapy, and yoga are time-honoured tools that help realign the body with its natural rhythms.
Modern therapies like ozone and quartz aren’t a departure from this—they’re thoughtful extensions. Ozone therapy, for instance, supports oxygen utilisation and immune modulation, accelerating the body’s natural detoxification process. Quartz healing uses warmth and mineral resonance to calm the nervous system and ease pain. Rather than choosing between old and new, we integrate them—with intention—so that they work together in service of the body’s innate capacity to heal.
Pema’s setting is incredibly unique—surrounded by hills and the ocean. How does this natural landscape influence the healing experiences you offer?
At Pema, nature is our silent guide. Cradled between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, our retreat is held by elements that instinctively calm the nervous system—the hush of trees, the rhythm of waves, the glow of early light. This environment does what no intervention can: it dissolves stress without effort. The body enters a state of rest. The mind begins to quiet. Breath deepens. From that space, healing begins—not just of the physical, but of the emotional and energetic self. Many guests describe moments here as brushstrokes with their innermost self—the Anandamaya Kosha, or bliss layer. We design experiences—meditations, nature walks, silent rituals—that allow for those encounters to unfold, gently and naturally.
Many guests speak of Pema’s nurturing, almost familial energy. How does being a family-led retreat shape the guest experience and the care they receive?
We’ve always imagined Pema as a home. Being family-led allows us to create the kind of care that’s intimate, attentive, and deeply human. We’re present in the day-to-day—not just in the vision but in the details. Guests feel that. Many tell us what stays with them isn’t only the therapies but the way they were held—with warmth, with presence, with a sense of being truly seen. Our team, many of whom have been with us for years, embody that same spirit. There’s a culture here—of kindness, of listening, of showing up fully. Healing, we believe, happens best in safe spaces. And at Pema, that safety begins with love.
The concept of healing across the five koshas is central to your programmes. How do you integrate this philosophy practically through therapies, yoga, and diet?
At Pema, we honour the five koshas as a roadmap to wholeness—from the physical to the most subtle layers of being. The Annamaya Kosha, or physical body, is supported through tailored nutrition, herbal therapies, hydrotherapy, and restorative treatments that cleanse and strengthen. The Pranamaya Kosha, our energy body, is awakened through breathwork, acupuncture, nature immersion, and mindful movement, allowing prana to flow freely.
To ease the Manomaya Kosha, the emotional-mind layer, we offer meditation, therapeutic conversations, and intentional silence—softening the inner landscape. Through contemplative practices, reflective nature walks, and guided consultations, we deepen our connection to the Vijnanamaya Kosha, the intuitive wisdom body. And finally, through rituals, joy, rest, and play, we create conditions for the Anandamaya Kosha—the bliss body—to naturally arise. Healing isn’t linear. It’s layered and deeply individual. At Pema, we hold space for each layer to find its own balance.
Can you share more about signature therapies like quartz therapy and barefoot reflexology trails—and how they contribute to physical and emotional renewal?
Quartz Therapy uses the warmth of mineral-rich sand to create a cocoon of deep relaxation. The heat eases muscle tension, improves circulation, and soothes the nervous system. It’s grounding, restorative, and emotionally calming—especially for those carrying stress in the body. The Barefoot Reflexology Trail is a slow, sensory experience. Walking barefoot across textured natural surfaces—wood, pebbles, mud—stimulates reflex points, enhances circulation, and gently awakens the body. But it also reconnects you with the earth, bringing clarity, presence, and emotional release. Together, they blend touch, heat, movement, and mindfulness—creating openings for both physical renewal and emotional lightness.
What do you hope each guest takes away from their time at Pema—not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally?
More than anything, we hope they leave remembering who they are—beyond the noise of their routines, beyond stress and survival. Physically, we want them to feel lighter, stronger, and more in tune with their body. Emotionally, we hope they feel safe, softened, and spacious. Spiritually, we hope they reconnect with that quiet inner knowing that often gets drowned out. We don’t aim to fix people. We aim to support their remembering—to give them tools, insights, and small rituals they can carry home. At Pema, we don’t promise bliss. We simply make space for it to rise.
