A ryokan stay begins before you reach your room. Shoes come off at the genkan, slippers replace them, a cup of tea arrives, and the pace of the day starts to change. The experience is less about adding more to an itinerary and more about paying attention to what is already there: the warmth of a wooden bath, the texture of tatami underfoot, a seasonal flower in a tokonoma alcove, or a carefully arranged meal that reflects the landscape outside.
