If a spaceship landed on a mountain in northern Czechia, it might look something like Ještěd. Rising from the summit of Mount Ještěd above Liberec, the silvery, tapering structure looks startlingly futuristic, even more than five decades after it opened. Yet its strange shape was never intended as a gimmick. It was a practical answer to an architectural problem: how do you build a hotel and television transmitter on one of the country's most windswept summits without fighting the mountain?
