Goa commemorates the death of Asura king Narakasura the day before Diwali. Every neighbourhood creates its own effigy of the demon king using straw, paper, and recycled materials for this unique community festival

India is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse nations in the world, and this diversity can be seen in the cuisines, traditional textiles, architecture, languages, and festivals it celebrates. There are many various ways to celebrate Diwali as well. Right now, if you were in Goa, you would see enormous effigies across the state being taken around in vehicles. These are effigies of the demon king Narakasura. Made of straw, paper, and other materials, they are created for Narak Chaturdashi, which is celebrated lavishly in Goa the day before Diwali.
