Experience Goa's Susegaad Life In Chorao Island

Away from the happening hubs like Assagao, Anjuna and Baga, and 5 km from Panaji lies a secluded island across river Mandovi. This island has many names&ndashChoddnnem, Chodan, but most popularly, Chorao. Since it's yet to become a popular spot among tourists, it is here that you can genuinely enjoy the famous Goan way of life, described by the term Susegaad. Considered the largest island of the seventeen that make Goa, there's a lot you can do on Chorao island. 

A Blend Of Cultures

The island features a unique blend of Brahmin and Portuguese cultures dating back centuries. According to historian Jose Gerson da Cunha, Chorao was considered the ancient site for Tirtha (meaning sacred pool). However, in 1510, when the Portuguese colonised the island, the island's culture also came to be Christianised. Therefore, you will find beautifully carved temples devoted to Lord Krishna and churches featuring ornate facades. To witness this unique coexistence, head to Shree Devki Krishna Temple, St. Bartholomew's Church and Chapel of St. Jerome, which is also now a state-protected site as per ASI's directive. 

Amidst Nature 

Surrounded by lush greenery and divided from the capital by the backwaters of Mandovi, Chorao island is a definite paradise for nature lovers. A boat ride across the tranquil river is the best way to immerse yourself in Chorao's nature&ndashespecially during early mornings. The river runs along Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary therefore, you can spot many exotic species like kingfishers, kites, drongos and more. It's an hour-long experience, costing only Rs 75 per head. 

What To Eat In Chorao

On Chorao island, you will also experience Goa's authentic flavours. If you are jaded by the mainstream cafes Goa has become home to, then the island has many gems to change your mind. However, most eateries here may look ordinary at first, with only a few tables and wobbly plastic chairs, but they sure know how to whip up soulful magic. Lafayette restaurant in Chorao's Mormugao area is the best place to try authentic homemade Goan dishes prepared lovingly by Ms Fatima. The restaurant is open from 8 AM to 10 PM and exudes a cosy vibe where several hours fly by. Since Goa's local liquor, Feni, is famed for its unique flavour profile, Chorao has many taverns where you can try your hand at making it and taste different types of it. 

How To Reach 

The island is not connected to Panaji or other areas of Goa by road. To reach Chorao, you would have to cross the Mandovi river. It is recommended that you drive to Ribandar ferry point, where many ferries run to Chorao Island between 6 AM and 12 AM.
