When Scotsman Peter Orr moved to Chennai (then Madras Presidency) in the mid-nineteenth century, he must have had no idea that he would become an official timekeeper of the city. The chronometer maker joined George Gordon & Co and, in 1849, after Gordon&rsquos death, took over the watch business and turned P. Orr & Sons into one of Chennai&rsquos biggest retailers. I remember the radio jingle from when I was a child in Chennai kala kalamaga makkal gadigaram vangum idam &mdash where people have been buying watches for generations.
