Shortly after I moved to a flat on 125th Street in the autumn of 1999, I came across two pieces of fiction that framed Harlem and India for me in a kind of strange symmetry. The first was a novel by Arun Joshi, The Strange Case of Billy Biswas. I had picked up a copy discarded by the Columbia University library, and one evening &mdash with hip-hop music from the street below starting as if on cue &mdash I began flipping through it. Little of the novel had to do with America, but I discovered that Joshi&rsquos protagonist moves to Harlem while a graduate student at Columbia University. White America is much too civilised for him it is in Harlem that Billy begins a process of questioning that will finally lead him into the tribal areas of Central India.
