Sioux obstinately climbed the wrong way, a tough, stubborn mustang that didn&rsquot deign to notice my frantic commands at the rein. She didn&rsquot want to go back down into the Bat Canyon. The narrow, rocky trail descended to a remote, southern branch of the Canyon de Chelly. Pronounced &lsquoshay&rsquo, the canyon is a national park in northeast Arizona located within the homeland of the Navajo Indians. The Indians cultivate the canyon floor, growing traditional crops like squash. And high on the steep red sandstone walls are ruins, homes of the ancient and mysterious Anasazi.
