There was something unnatural about this to be standing within two feet of a paradise shelduck. We had just been offloaded on the shores of Abel Tasman National Park in South Island by a small ferry that was making its way along the coast dropping off visitors at various points who had signed up for coastal walks. My friend and I were given a detailed map of the route that we would take. We had barely left the gold-tinted sands of the bay, when the paradise duck walked right up to us. I did the only thing I could possibly do in the circumstances &mdash pull out my camera.
