Kerala has some of the most lively festivals known in India. We bring our favourite ones.

Theyyam

Plan your trips to Kannur and Kasargod to coincide with the region's theyyam ceremonies. Theyyam is a traditional dance practice that tells the history and myths of Kerala. Men will perform dancing, singing, and even mime in this magnificent show. You should look forward to seeing fire walks by men dressed in spectacular costumes. These performances are generally held in temple complexes. So it is advisable to ask for permission if you want to photograph the event.

Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is a notable temple festival celebrated for over 200 years in Kerala. This event is conducted&nbspyearly at the Thrissur Vadakkunnathan&nbsptemple. The festival is best known for its display of caparisoned elephants and fireworks among other things. The celebration is performed to pay respect to Lord Shiva.

Makaravilakku

This Kerala traditional event lasts a week and coincides with the well-known Hindu holiday of Makar Sankranti. Keralans worship Lord Ayyappa's idol on this day. The entire event is organised at Sabarimala's Ayyappa Temple. During the festival, one may watch the Divya Jyothi from nine locations in Sannidhanam. Participate in the Thiruvabharanam procession as well. During this procession, you may watch the Lord's accoutrements transferred from the Old Palace to Sabarimala.

Christmas

Christmas&nbspis widely celebrated in Kerala, where Christians account for one-quarter of the population. Street decorations, beach competitions, lighting, and bursting of firecrackers add to the joyous celebrations. The Christmas&nbspliturgy is held in churches, where models represent the life of Jesus Christ.
