Places to Visit

Taj-ul-Masjid

One of the largest mosques in Asia, the Taj-ul-Masjid is a prominent landmark of Bhopal. Taking inspiration from Mughal architecture, the mosque has a pink facade topped by 18-storey high octagonal minarets with marble domes and attractive pillars. The ceilings here are decorated with ornate petalled designs.

Shaukat Mahal

Located at a distance of 4km from Bhopal railway station, the Shaukat Mahal is one of Bhopal's most beautiful architectural marvels. It was constructed in the 1800s as a wedding gift for Sikander Jehan Begum, the first female ruler of Bhopal. A mix of Indo-Islamic and European architecture, Shaukat Mahal's roof is adorned with a series of triangular-shaped arches.

Moti Masjid

This iconic mosque was built in the 19th century by Sikander Jehan Begum (Nawab of Bhopal from 1860 to 1868), the daughter of Qadsia Begum (wife of Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah and mother of emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur). The architecture of this mosque greatly resembles the Jama Masjid of Delhi. The white marble mosque is a treat to the eyes and gives a feeling of peace and serenity, making it a must-visit place.

Sadar Manzil

This royal building is located in the city's heart and used to be the hall of a public audience for the rulers of Bhopal. Set amid picturesque and well-laid-out gardens, this is where the nawabs of the city would meet with the masses and address them on important occasions.

Upper and Lower Lake

The "Bada Talaab," or Upper Lake, is one of the oldest artificial lakes in the country. Spread over 36 sq km, it provides tourists with great views and water sports opportunities such as canoeing. To its east lies the "Chota Talaab" or Lower Lake, constructed by Chote Khan, nawab Hayat Mohammad Khan's minister.

Laxmi Narayan Temple

Situated in the Arera Hills is the Laxmi Narayan Temple, dedicated to Goddess Laxmi and Lord Vishnu. There is a statue of Lord Shiva with his wife, Goddess Parvati also. The temple structure has carved archways and is surrounded by well-maintained lawns.

State Archaeological Museum

The State Archaeological Museum houses a unique selection of sculptures from all parts of the state. It has a collection of ancient artefacts, statues of Buddha and Lakshmi, paintings and images of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and a collection of art pieces and rare antiquities.

Paya Soup - Chatori Gali
If you come to this food haven, don't miss the mutton Paya soup (lightly spiced lamb slow-boiled in a broth). Also, unlike the Paya soup found in other parts of the country, the Paya soup served here is thick and less oily.
