The third instalment of Enola Holmes on Netflix focuses on the identity crisis that Millie Bobby Brown’s character faces as she investigates her brother’s kidnapping and struggles with the idea of marriage. The first two movies centred around England, and the third takes production over to the Mediterranean. Right at the beginning of the movie, we are taken to the beautiful landscapes of Malta, where much of the adventure unfolds. Explore the different locations Enola traverses through below.

Surrey, UK

Initial production of the film began in the Shepperton Studios, UK. Scenes which required elaborate interior sets, like the army headquarters, were shot in Surrey. The pre-wedding banquet was shot at a school in the same location.

Hertfordshire, UK

This historic ceremonial county is very close to London and provides a lush countryside with heritage homes. It has become a filming location for many movies, including Harry Potter and Batman. The Hatfield House, a recurring presence in the first and second instalments, also appeared in the third movie as Basilwether Hall, the Tewkesbury family estate.

Queen Anne’s Gate, London

Queen Anne’s Gate in London became the backdrop for the iconic Baker Street. It was here that the exterior shots of Baker Street were taken, much like the first two movies. The movie, however, very quickly departs elsewhere and locates itself in the historic horizons of Malta.

The smallest capital city of the European Union, this UNESCO World Heritage site provided perfect locations to shoot a movie set in the Victorian era. The roads were modified to convert them into 19th-century streets to shoot the carnival scenes. This quaint town displays stunning 16th-century Baroque architecture and ancient seawalls built by St John’s Knights in the 16th and 17th centuries. The city’s skyline becomes the introductory shot into Malta for the viewers.

St Paul’s Cathedral, Mdina

The wedding sequence of Enola and Tewkesbury was shot at St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina. A small, quiet city with a small population, this fortified medieval city provided an ideal location for the shoot. The 12th-century cathedral is a popular tourist spot where visitors can absorb the architectural genius of Lorenzo Gafà. The car-free hilltop town was also utilised for a few other chase scenes.

With real-life shoot locations instead of sets, a new authenticity was breathed into the look of the film.

Mellieha, Malta

A large beach town scattered with historic landmarks, Mellieha became one of the locations where scenes from the movie were shot. The coastal town immerses visitors in its history with the 17th-century St Agatha’s tower and 19th-century Sanctuary of Our Lady being places one must visit on their itinerary. The unusual Popeye-themed park is another landmark which piques the interest of visitors.

Fort Ricasoli, Kalkara

This 17th-century fortress in Malta witnessed many of the film’s action sequences. Known to host shoots for shows like Game of Thrones, the bastioned fortress was built by St John to protect the Old Harbour. The historical site functions as an active studio for film shoots now. Kalkara is also the region where the Malta film studio is located. The studios also ended up being one of the filming locations.

Filming on site made the design of the movie appear much more realistic and took away some of the artificiality. You can visit these locations, many of which are tourist hotspots, yourself!
