In a diary entry dated December 23, 1895, Gladstone described the establishment of the library at St Deiniol's. According to the entry, he had constituted his trust on that day, and the total cost of the work was around £41 to £42000, which included some maintenance charges up to December 31, 1895. "I have this day constituted my trust at St Deiniol’s. The cost of the work has been I think £41 to £42000, including some charges of maintenance to Dec. 31. 95. May God of His mercy prosper it."
