Visit These Museums Showcasing The Heritage Of The Northeast

Jawaharlal Nehru Museum, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh 

One of the first state museums in the northeast, along with the Assam State Museum, the Jawaharlal Nehru Museum, was established 46 years ago to commemorate the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is considered to be the best ethnographic museum in the country. You must visit the Mountaineering Gallery, which has climbing gear donated by Tapi Mra, the first Arunachali to summit Mount Everest.

Mizoram State Museum, Aizawl, Mizoram

A well-curated ethnographic museum with many collections on display, this museum located at Bawlhmun, Macdonald Hill, Zarkawt, in Aizawl, was established in 1977. It moved into its current permanent premises only in 1990 and was modernised and improved with the assistance of the Indian Museum, Kolkata. 

Timings: Monday-Friday, 10 am-3.30 pm; Saturday, 10 am-2 pm

Nagaland State Museum, Kohima, Nagaland

To get a deeper insight into the history and culture of Nagaland, visit the Kohima State Museum. Located in Bayavu Hill, about one and a half kilometres from the city centre, the museum was established in 1970. It houses rare artefacts belonging to all 16 tribes of Nagaland. From tribal attire and weapons to jewellery and sculptures, the exhibits portray every aspect of Naga life.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT), Deorali, Sikkim

About two kilometres from Gangtok city centre, the foundation stone of Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was laid in 1957 by the present Dalai Lama 1957. The museum was inaugurated by the then-prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. If you are curious about Buddhism and Tibetan socio-religious customs, you must visit NIT.

Ujjayanta Palace Museum, Agartala, Tripura

The Ujjayanta Palace Museum is a sight to behold, surrounded by Mughal-style gardens with lit-up fountains. The Chinese room, crafted by artisans from China, now houses the State Legislative Assembly. Built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya during 1899-1901, this museum is a two-storey mansion with an 86-foot-high central dome.
